i have horizontal pretty much nailed down, but vertical is kicking my ***. any tips? i cant even post picks they are so horrible. running around 75 amps, again w/ 60-10, and it seems like every time i get a good fillet goin, i loose the arc half way up. i know 60-10 isnt the cleanest, but i need to nail it down before goin w/ 70-18.
basically i am looking for what you guys do, i mean semi circles, zig zags. any help is appreciated. class wednesday, if i dont nail it down there, ill bring the coupons home and post em up. i have the utmost faith in my instructor, but he is one person in a class of 15 he hee.
thanks in advance.
p.s. the speedglas was a good choice for a hood. i am liking it so far.

From what I remember doing stick in night class is to hold it to the sides a little bit longer and try to quick pass over the middle since the middle will have the most heat build up from constant passing back and forth. Pretty much you want to build "shelves" as you keep going up so that the puddle doesn't keep dripping down.
for root pass on v-up 60-10 you want to do a upside down "T"then for the cover pass you want to be doing a "J" shape. come down then loop it out alittle then back up.
same thing im working on right now
and you can try higher amps tosome times it helps.

I'm sure your instructor showed you this, since you've go horizontal down, but just to make sure, are you going up one electrode diameter and then down half the electrode diameter to fill the crater. Move your wrist not your whole hand when you whip it in and out. When you move up it should be just tenths of a second and then back to fill the crater for a second or longer. Fill the crater don't just go through the motion, don't go to fast. That's the way I was taught to weld with 6010,6011... cause they burn so hot. Did your instructor start you up with 6010 and 7018 next? Because 7018 is by far one of the easiest to weld with.

yeah 60-10 first then get that nailed down then 70-18, i know how much easier 70-18 is. they way he explained it to me was up 3/16, back an 18th. try again tonight.

7018 is cake compared to 6010 or alike. It's "high build", doesn't "burn as hot" and as long as you can move your hand steadily in a line (no whipping in and out like with 6010), you can lay a good bead. I usually do little zig-zag, semi circle movement with it. Are you going to take more stick welding courses and go into pipe welding or is this all in one class (stick, mig, tig, oxy/fuel). Good luck with the tests.

i sucked using 6010 in my stick class, good luck with it. we had a choice of which rods and i always went with 7018 or 7014 cant remember which i liked best. i hate stick welding though
hey man 7018 is easy doing v-up , Like someone said befor hold the sides longer i always use, 1 2 counting it works the best then move st8 across then count 1 2 here is my 3rd time v-up , its so easy , and im only 17 and atending aburn career center , heres my pics of v -up and 10 pass 1 pass with 70-18
Pictures dont do justice ether

All done with 7018 stick the v-up is at dc+85 amps and the bead is at 110 dc+

yeah 7018 is easier, but i need to learn 6010 first, been getting better, stringers look good, just undercut to deal with now, so now i am messing with amperage. class again tomorrow night.
thanks everyone.

its not 60-10, its ER6010.
anyways, you want to do your uphand 6010 in stepping motions, step 1 rod width upward, 1/2 rod width backard, in a nice even motion. should yield you a clean even weld that appears similar to the stack of dimes that everyone strives for with tig. (once you clean all the flux off with a wire wheel.)

Whipping is the term used for it and it's a hard skill to accomplish to get the perfect dime look. I'm currently working on it at school with a whip/weave with a 5/32 rod. Circular weave motion and then a whip, circular weave then whip...and so on. It's a bitch and it's all in the wrist.

yep, it's tough to get the hang of, but if you can run a nice looking 6010 bead you can pretty much weld with anything.
when i was in 1st year learning 6010 was a ************ for alot of the guys, especially the ones who'd never worked on portable welders. those were the guys that had only ever welded with mig/fcaw, stab & stick!! heh.
it was only 5 years ago but damn it feels like an eternity ago

well i think i figured out why i was getting the undercut. they way i was whipping the stick, was kinda like a crescent moon as i rose up the fillet. BUT i figured out where i was getting the undercut, as i was goin up, i wasnt going up the center, rather goin up the outter edges and thats where i was getting the undercut, i am back to 1/8 60-10, (tried 3/16 60-10 and lowerd the amps) and back up to 75 amps. no more undercut but a little porosity, but i an getting better at that. thanks for the help fellas

well i have come to the conclusion that what is impossible for most, i have no problem doing, except building a nasty 900hp monster he hee.
i think it is actually lack of uniformity more than porosity, but i have the technique better, just still getting undercut. i think it is filler angle, but my instructor is gonna take some time with me monday night. i am getting better, but i think i should have had it by now.

Don't get discouraged. 6011 is not easy. Moving to a 7018 will be a piece of cake once you have become comfortable with 6010 or 6011. 7018 does have its share of difficulties though, (arc starts and sticking).
Good luck and stick to it!
Good luck and stick to it!
Im doing the samething in my college class right now, except he is having us use 7018 instead of 6010. I suck at vertical but im decent with my horizontal. I'll try to get some pictures of what I do tonight

i got. it last night, passed my root / weave with a 98, and then got a 95 on 3 stringers on top of that.
overhead starts monday night.
thanks for the help everyone.

Oh yeah I did some vertical welds but got bored with it after like 5, so I started welding some junk steel together. I filled a gap between two peices of steel that was about an inch apart
Also I was frustrated with class yesterday, another classmate was mig welding in the booth in front of me and some how some of his sparks would jump over the 6 foot wall and land in my hair burning some of it up
First time it happened I stopped welding so fast lol to check out the damage to my dome.

So, you guys are in college welding classes too? I'm in a 2 year auto tech class, and we have a small 1 credit hour welding lecture/lab. Its pretty fun. I just finished up all of my SMAW projects I had to do..it seems you guys are going more in depth than we are. I had to do stringer beads for 6013/7014 and open and closed butt joints for 6013/7014/6010 and 6011, and lap and tee joints with some 7014 and 7024 Electrodes....And I HATE 6011 its like the ugliest weld..I guess thats just because its a deep penetrating rod, burns pretty hot. Anyway..my favorite is 6013..stuff just welds like butter..I laid out my 6013 stringer bead and the slag from the flux was just falling off from the weld before I hit it..it had that blueish/goldish color, now that is a beautiful thing with a stick welder. Do they make you guys weld a circle onto a flat peice of steel? its alot harder then it seems..especially since they make us do it with a "mystery rod" we have to find the right polarity and amperage for it, basically here is no markings on the electrodes. I'm just starting my 1/16 MIG projects now..hopefully I'll be able to try TIG out before the end of the semester. I'll post pics if I do.
