ran hot till i turned on heater, anyone know what this could be?
ok it ran hot for just about 5-10 min, not really hot but just instead of having the needle more on the cool side of the guage, it was opposing on the other side. but i was thinking while driving, thermostat? leak? etc. i had quick idea, reached over, slid the heater on over, and instantly as coolant flowed through heater core, the temp dropped to normal withing 2 seconds, what caused this? the little box/valve where both coolant lines run through fire wall? maybe malfunction? got stuck? wasn't allowing flow? anyone have an idea? also sometimes car idle's funny, no cel light, but if you hook up the paper clip and check, it will give code 3- map sensor. but doesn't normally give cel, but will every once in while? any idea on this? last but not least, the best, how do i keep rats from getting under the hood and quit chewing on my 80 dollar accel wires and vac lines? its pissing me off.

no but i live in the country and there is a field beside my house, but i noticed it when i had my mechanice replace dizzy and when i looked at it later that day i notices little gnashes everywhere and something nasty on air filter head. my dad told me those weren't little marks made by a pair of pliers on the vac hoses and spark plug wires but rat teeth marks, explains what that was on the filter, rat turd, but i can't have that crap, on one of the wires he chewed throught enought silicone insulation i can see a little white of the outer shielding, not cool, cause i just bought them.

Haha never heard of anyone having rat problems in their car.
Also, running too hot = thermostat not opening up, or not all the way, like the other people said. My car did the opposite, it got stuck open and ran cold.

yea maybe its only partially working, should i just get the 6 dollar cheapy at autozone or is it worth it to spend the money on a spoon or similiar one that opens like at 12degrees celsius less than oem? is that extra money worth it? oh yea, sucks i hate rats but never had prob before, i was told if i lightly rub grease over the hose's and wires they won't want to eat on it.
Don't get a cheap autozone one but don't waste your money on a Spoon or Mugen one either. An OEM one should be about $15 or $20. Plus you don't want the thermostat opening too soon anyway so that you don't run too cold, that's just for high-power high-heat race track situations I'd think (and the JDM ****** who will put any random useless Japanese part of their car just to say they have a Japanese part).

Getting a thermostat that opens sooner is not beneficial in any way. Think about it, there's no point. Just get another OEM one that's made for your application so that it doesn't take 1/2 an hour to warm your car up to normal operating temps.
