Default Prelude help to a newbie Please

Guys I am looking at a 1997 Prelude, 5 speed, blown engine. I am willing to pay $1500. The guy wont go lower than $1700. 140,000 on the chassis. What do you think is a fair price for the car?
I want to replace the motor and trans with an h22, but not sure which one. Could you guys please direct me to some internet websites and show me exactly what engine and trans. I need? My buddy and I will be doing the install. Actually, my buddy will mainly be doing the install as he is an automotive technician that knows what he is doing. I am not sure if I want USD or JDM. I need your help fellas. I am in PA.

being a noob, i dont know.. but I've been looking for the chassis alone too and it comes down to the title and the exterior condition. is it a salvage? are there a lot of dings and is the paint chipping? that kinda thing.. you should tell the guy 1700 is pretty high for something that doesnt run. or if it is a salvage or has the defects, tell him and his ***** should shrink on the price. if he mentions that its a prelude and the rarity of it, simply tell him its rare if its running.

actually, if the body is in good shape, and the engine is the only thing wrong with it, then it is a good price. It already has an h22 in it(all 5th gens. came with the h22). I bought my h22 longblock for 900 bucks. So essentially, you could have a running, nice 5th gen for around 3000 dollars. Running 5th gens with that mileage go for about double that(if kept in mint condition)

I dont know everything, but 1700 for a clean 5th gen shell is a hell of a good deal. Consider running base 5th gens go for around 6000+. Ive seen a clean *** base go for 11k. Now tell me how it isnt a good deal, when he can get an engine for around a 1000, and drop it in. Have a nice *** car for around 3 grand?

Ive seen eg hatch shells go for more than that.

i cant handle the united states pricing for preludes its is acutally insane. In canada a prelude like that would go for 4 to 5 grand. And if you found one mint and running it would go for 17-20 grand. Next car i buy im coming down to pick it up and pay the ridiculously cheap pricing

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I went and looked at the prelude today. It is black exterior, 1 ding on each door, other than that the body is in great condition for the car being a 97. Paint is pretty glossy, looks like it will clean up real nice. The guy was in an accident prior to blowing the engine and the body shop replaced the hood, fender, 1 headlight, 1 doorskin. There doesnt appear to be any frame damage, but I am going to get a second opinion from a mechanic before I make a move.

Underside has virtually no rust. Interior is in good condition as well, but no radio/headunit. Brake rotors are rusted to hell as it has been sitting for the past 8 months or so. It has been sitting on a driveway though, not in the grass or something.

The guy blew the engine because there was no oil in the motor because the shop that changed the oil put hardly any in the crankcase. I am assuming this motor is bad and its better to just buy a used jdm motor and trans.

Personally for a chassis with all working parts and a blown engine, 1700 ain't bad at all, but that's my personal opinion. If you think it's worth it, do it. If not, keep lookin. As for engine replacement, why waste your time with all the conversions? If you can find an h22a4 that's cheap, I'd just recommend dropping that in - little to no work, and a great amount of hp. My two cents.

For example you can pay up to this: http://www.canadatrader.com/re...srt=1 for a 97 here in Canada so I would say 1700 American for a shell and a motor that's blown is a great deal.

I have been doing some research and I think I have decided that I want to go with the 97-01 jdm h22 w/ obd 2. Hmotorsonline doesnt have this engine on their website, does anyone know if they stock the motor? I found this motor at JSAmotors.com for 2700+150 shipping. Could anyone point me in the direction to buy an h22 w/obd 2 for a reasonable price. In the future I will be adding a turbo charger to this car, is there another engine you guys would recomend? Thanks - Mark.

i think that 1700 is a fair price for it. just make sure you get a good motor and get a reliable person to put it in and you will save some money that way.
