Default ls v-tec

i tried to search the forums but because of the search words it doesn't pull up any results...anyway, i'm wondering what the advantages are of going with an ls v-tec setup rather than a normal b18 v-tec setup?

Are you high?

an LS motor is a B18B. B18-VTEC = LS-VTEC.

And as for the advantages of LS-VTEC over a B18C1, basically, cost. It's cheaper to find an OBD1 LS motor and then get yourself a GSR head and B16 tranny.

cost is cheaper
and you will have a slightly higher torque than the gsr
if you are using the ls tranny you will have slightly beter gas milage too becuase they have taller gears, at least 4rth and 5th that i know of

LS block is much cheaper

LS block has an 89mm crank compared to the 87.2mm crank of the GSR/ITR

Yeah but you're going to be alot slower compared to someone with a B16/ITR tranny

please excuse my ridiculous newb-ness, but are you guys saying that an ls-vtec is the same thing as a regular vtec engine? i thought it was a non-vtec integra ls block with a gsr head?

i'm going to be putting all this into an early 90s honda civic hatch

and does the b16 tranny have closer gears??

thanks for the help so far guys, if you ever have any questions about A4s, i'm your man

b16 has much closer gears, but you will suffer in mileage and I belive some topend.. best combo is b16 tranny with ls 5th..

Essentially yes. With the right internals/build, an LS/V can even be considered better than stock B-series engines

Yes much closer compared to an LS tranny.

Why do A4's suck so much? j/k

Mileage isn't that bad. Only complaint I have about my tranny is that I can't keep up with people sometimes on the highway because I don't want to cruise at 6k rpms

mileage is awful, I remember being in my buddies b16a2 swapped hatch..

He's at like 120km/h, at 4500rpm

my d16y8, 140km/h at 4000rpm

gas mileage will suffer and you would be at 4k rpm's doing roughly mph. i would suggest the LS 5th gear swap if your on the highway alot.

the LS/VTEC wont be as reliable as a factory built GSR/ITR motor....................

no oil squirters as well soo the bottom end will take a lot more punishment and the LS bottom end is not made to spin past 7500rpm................

also, as with any frankenstein motor, it will have its share of running issues and tuning is a must to get the power out of this particular motor

some good parts of this motor are the added torque and the cost...............mine ran a 14.6@97mph in a 99 EK coupe................also, i would get any VTEC tranny soo it will not drop out of VTEC..........

thanks guys...a couple more questions..

what parts would i need to replace on the ls block to make it as reliable as the regular vtec block?

also, is an auto-manual conversion doable? i've found a couple auto civics, but since i'm doing a motor/tranny swap i was hoping it wouldn't matter?

LAST question (for now anyway), does anyone have a good link that explains OBD ports and mixing parts from different gens?
