Default battery light on all of a sudden

i was just driving earlier and i looked at my speedo and noticed that the battery light is on ! i stopped and checked the ECU for any codes and none...the motor is running fine...the stereo is fine...lights aren't dim...what could it be ??

can anyone tell me why it went on and what can i do to turn it off ??

has anyone ever have this same experience??

i already tried resetting the ECU but that didn't help...

anyone???

If the light is still on, try tapping the alternator with a broom stick or something similar. If the light goes out its probably the alternator brushes. They can be replace separatly, but if it has more than 100,000 miles on it I would recomend an alternator.

Yes it is. It is your battery warning light.

I will go ahead and confirm to you, yup, its your alternater. Check the connections, and the belt first though. Good luck man.

If it's a rebuilt alternator , theres a chance it was not done correctly and it'll not charge at low RPM's . I had 2 from NAPA do this . A few words of advice on the alt. swap : prepare to swear

easiest way is to pull the master cylinder out...i played around with he alternator disconnected trying to weasel it out without taking anything off for like an hour....just take the master cylinder out and it will pop right out but just moving some hoses. it is very easy if you do this...and do it yourself...im 17yrs old and i had no experience on cars when i did this...if i can do it you can....shop wanted 400+$ to do it...buy an alternator....DO IT YOURSELF!!!

i will go ahead and pull it off tomorrow but first i'll try tapping it see if the light goes out.

can anyone convert 100,000 miles in KMS ??

when i pull the master cylinder out, do i have to disconnect the brake lines from it??

if so, i will have to bleed all the brakes, right??

i don't know if its been rebuilt or not and how long its been there or if its the original alternator but it never gave me any problems since i bought it which is two years ago...

and i just thought of something...if tapping it doesn't do it...the A6 motor i just bought may still have the alternator with it...i hope it still does when i check first thing i wake up.

thanks for the replies by the way!

(if you don't want to, don't read this)
i hope i don't get flamed for this but replacing an alternator should be easy for me since i did major in automotive during high school and come to think of it...i remember dismantling an alternator and rebuilding it with new parts as part of the course...and all what goes on inside that alternator and how it works....but i really don't remember much of the stuff that i've been taught unless the problem is right in front of me...too bad i fucked up my grades in grade 11 or else i'd be a level two apprentice by now...just thought i'd add all this info

well it was like three hours ago since i installed the nippodenso alt. and no more warning light. SWEET!! and the best thing is i didn't even have to remove the master cylinder!! i managed to slip it out on the left side of the engine bay moving some hoses aside. the part where it took like 20 mins is when i tried aligning the bottom thorough bolt through the alt. and the rest was a breeze! thanks everyone!

hey moderator! you can delete this post if you want...i got what i needed.

as for removing the alt. just unbolt it completely, then unbolt the lower mount. you should be able to squeeze it out the side on top of the axle.
