Default Need serious help before taking car to shop, already searched.

My girl and I share a 99 prelude automatic.
We keep getting a random occurrences with the engine shutting off while driving. It doesn't matter what rpm Im at, or when Im going forward or backward. When engine dies I have to go through the motion of putting the car back to park and turn the ignition to start engine, which can get very annoying. If anyone ever experience this problem please share it here. Thanks in advance.

A co-worker of mine says it could be the TPS acting up. Hopefully he's right.
Engine has no mod. Completely stock.

When an ignition coil goes bad, it will shut the car down, and the car can't be started until it cools off a little. Will your car start up again right away? If so this may not be the problem.

fast_honda, you are actually referring to the ignition MODULE, not the coil....the coil is basically measured in ohms, or resistance...when the coil goes it ohms out of the tolerable range for resistance, and does not revitalize itself after sitting for awhile...normal occurrences of a bad coil is sputtering and misfiring until the car dies completely and will not restart....

i personally would be looking at the igntion module which runs a series of different aspects of engine control....fuel and spark and timing, etc....when this goes it usually works fine when cold but when heated up will die out...you will then have to wait a minute to restart, and the problem will re-occur...on the flip side, a new one is only about $82 from autozone....i would recommened looking into the IGNITION MODULE and just simply ohming out the COIL to see its resistance, and replace both at the same time...the igntion switch itself may be faulty BUT the switch is essentially a multi-pin relay....issues will normally occur at startup and maintain...losing the electrical current thru the switch while driving CAN happen but is a rarity....unfortunately there is no way to test this and I would recommned the coil/module replacement as these have always been a weak point for all Hondas since conception.

Wow, you guys are a very big help and very fast. Thanks for the all of the input. I will def look into the ignition module or anything ignition related for that matter.

I may need to have the shop do this for me so hopefully he doesn't rape me. My bro is a toyota mechanic so maybe he can swap it out if its that easy.

ive managed an autozone for 5 years, and we can normally check that **** for free....as long as we have the range for tolerance in ohms of the coil we can ohm it out...as far as the module we need to have the specific plug for it which may or may not be available for the prelude h22a4....but give your local autozone a call and see if they can test it...best of all its 100% accurate and 100% FREE

BTW....replacing the coil and module normally only takes 15 min max, so you're not in for too hard of an ordeal

it depends...i myself am partial to anyone that owns a honda and is not a dick about things...i have over 9 years of experience with these cars so if someone genuinely needs help i'd be glad to, opposed to them having to go to the dealer...as far as autozone is concerned, it would probably be best if you brought the coil and module to them seperately, but to take out the coil and module is no big deal...essentially about 5 or 6 screws...so its your choice but i would rather have you do it in case you get someone there who isnt as familiar with them
