bypass valve?
I just got a cold air intake for my 02 honda civic ex and i was wondering if i should get a bypass valve considering its been raining alot lately. Will that stop water from entering the engine? Any help would be great thanks!
my brother had one on his jetta and it did nuthing. his mas air sensor went out like twice a month. unless u drive your car into a deep puddle were your whole intake is submerged in water. i dont think u need one.
wait this reminds me of a funny story about that VW. haha . we were on the freeway cruising down to downtown seattle to go to dicks ( bomb food ) anywho. we take the exit off the freeway and halfway down the off ramp we hear a loud noise and feel the car shake. we get out and see that his oil pan is completely torn off. we both walked up the off ramp to see what it was that he hit. there was NUTHING there. he brought it to VW dealer since it was under waranty. they told him they wont fix it under the waranty because his cold air intake is the reason it fell off. yea.. they blamed it on his intake...
anywho just a random story.

unless you happen to be stupid enough to drive the car through a foot or more of water, the bypass is a waste of money. If you really need that kind of protection from yourself, should you really be working on your car?
it's a small $30 piece, why not? it won't hurt anything. if it works, then thats good, but i can't imagine it to do any more harm then good.
just be careful in puddles is the best thing you can do, if you decide not to get one.

yup we gotta shady *** subaru/VW dealer out here in so. san francisco. my buddy brought his modded subby to the dealer to have them realign the front bumper.........they ended up putting his car on the a rack and looking over the whole car telling him that his entire warranty was void cuz of some susp. and exhaust mods...bastards

I forget which magazine ran an article on the bypass valve, but they disproved it's functionality. They had an NSX, that they partially dipped the cone filter into water and the engine stalled out.

I believe it was Sport Compact Car, or something of that nature.

I saw the write up on that test with the NSX. Kinda crazy. They made a really long intake tube and dipped it in a fish tank. It worked great, but bear in mind that they had a SUPER long intake tube with almost a three foot vertical section.
It might be a good idea if you drive your car all of the time. I opted for the SRI in my Civic as I live in a VERY wet area (Seattle).

seeing as that neither CAI or SRI will make crap for power on a 7th gen, SRI is way easier to install and has no rain problems. Not to mention its a ton easier to clean the filter on a SRI. Some cold air kits are two pieces and you can just use the top piece to have an SRI, thats what i did. If its one piece, you can cut it near the fuse box and it will usualy work just fine.
