Timing Belt Broke (Question)
I have a 92 Prelude Non v-tech duel overhead cam eng. I think its a H23 -A1 , 138CID. My son was driving down the highway and the timing belt broke... Question is does any know if it bent the valves? I think the water pump went out that caused the belt to break.
Please help.

at highway speeds yes. your motor is probably done for,
an h22 swap is going to be your best bet or you
can get another h23 block.

Ok thanks for the info. Is there any free site's out there to help me with changing the belt and removing the head.
Thanks Luke J.

wierd how h22's are non-interference and h23s most likely are.</TD></TR></TABLE>
h22 and h23 are both interference engines...both dohc engines with timing belts which when it breaks...the cams STOP moving Therefore the valves stay still and the pistons come up and bend the valves, YES it bent the valves..im 99% sure about it.

on the stock motor the non-vtec cam profile makes it so that even if the valves are open and the piston is at the uppermost point of travel, it will not hit the valves. in vtec, though, since the valves open quite a bit more, there is the possibility of that happening should the timing belt mess up on ya.

i dunno, i've heard alot of talk that the h22 is a non-interference motor while not in vtec. these are comments from ppl who work on h22s regulary.
that said, again, i had the same problem with my h23. so i dunno

is this the same for the b20 preludes? my neighbors timing belt broke while he was driving it normally (not bangin gears) in town, down shifting from like 3rd to 2nd. is there anyway to tell if the valves are done under the valve cover? i was told if the lifters move there done. cylinders 2 and 4 move.
A B20, along with any Honda motor, doesn't have lifters, it only has rocker arms since the cams are directly touching the rocker arms (the peice that opens the valves). OHV(Over Head Valve) engines like chevy V8's have lifters that are connected to rocker arms (via pushrods) that push the valves. Lifters are needed in OHV engines because the cam sits inside the block under the heads.
The only way I know of checking for bent valves is to take the head off. That's how Honda checked mine when my timing belt broke on my H22A. Most likely some valves are bent.
