Ferguson / Mazworx Clinch NHRA East Coast SFWD Championship
October 4th, 2006. Orlando, FL - With the last and final event to cumulate points for the NHRA Sport FWD Championship being held at Englishtown Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ Team Mazworx made 18 hour trek to see how they luck would fair. Having a difficult first half of the 2006 race season although mathematically still in the running for the points championship the hopes for the team were low. The Englishtown NHRA event would actually give the team a chance at winning 2 races at one event as the elimination rounds from the rained our Moroso Motorsports Park NHRA event were to be held during Saturday qualifying for the New Jersey event.
Right off the trailer driver John Ferguson blasted a 9.87 @ 157.37 mph pass to land solidly in the # 4 qualifying position for the New Jersey event and continuing on for the elimination rounds from the Moroso event into the semifinals. The semifinal round for the Moroso event would pit Ferguson against top competitor Joe Simpson but when mechanical issues arose for Simpson, Ferguson took the easy win with his 9.73 @ 156 mph pass. The final round for the NHRA Moroso event brought Richard Vernon into the competing lane. Vernon got off to an early start giving Ferguson the automatic win but this didn't deter Ferguson from ripping a 9.63 @ 156 mph pass to take home the Wally. In doing so Ferguson also bumped his way into the # 2 qualifying position for the NHRA New Jersey Event.
"After the way our season had gone up to this point we are ecstatic at what we have accomplished thus far this weekend. It is only Saturday and we are already taking a Wally home, tomorrows event could rain out and we would be happy," said Ferguson after his winning pass. Well Sunday morning did bring rain as the team arrived to the track but as the skies cleared and the Englishtown Raceway Park staff dried the track the 1992 Honda Civic Sport FWD race car was prepared for Sunday's battle.
A solid 9.99 @ 156 mph pass moved Ferguson into the quarterfinals. Once again running in the 9 second range his 9.86 @ 153 mph pass moved him into the semifinals to face rival Joe Simpson. Simpson struggled though as Ferguson ran a new personal best in NHRA Sport FWD Trim with a 9.61 @ 157.43 mph 1/4 mile pass to move into the finals against Steve Lockett. Unbeknownst to the team as the weekend had progressed Ferguson had put himself in position to win the East Coast NHRA Sport FWD Points Championship with a win in the final round. As Ferguson pulled to the line for the final round match up against Lockett and took the green light he continued his dominance of the weekends events running a stout 9.70 @ 156 mph pass to lock down not only the NHRA Englishtown event win but the 2006 NHRA East Coast Sport FWD Championship as well.
"This was a storybook weekend. Coming into the event we just wanted to be competitive and have fun and ended up coming home with 2 Wally's and a Championship," Ferguson said.
The team travels next to Norwalk, Ohio for the NDRA 2006 Finals on October 14th-15th.
