Default tranny problem please help!!

alright im having a problem with my tranny. i have a 98 civic ex coupe with the stock d16y8 in it. well when i drive it sometimes pops out of gear when im going n when i just first put it in as well. Its only doing it in 2nd gear. could it be a loose shift linkage or bad syncros. any comments would help.

Sounds like your synchros are going out. First thing to do if you have a short shifter is to get rid of it.

If not, try getting GM Synchromesh, Friction Modified. You can buy those at any General Motors/Chevy dealership. Works great with Honda transmissions.

its your syncros because they match up your transmission speed with your engine speed so you dont grind your ******* gear teeth off when you try to shift so you need to get them fixed, but that will be more trouble and money than its worth and you'll end up spending just as much at a shop for them to fix it, so just buy a new tranny it will save you time and money

did you two actually even read what he said????? he never mentioned grinding gears, popping out of gear has nothing to do w/ the synchros.

OP: first things to check, shift linkage and all associated bushing for wear, looseness, etc.... then check motor mounts.

I hate to say it, but it's probably worse than that. If it's popping out of gear, there is probably an internal component with excessive wear somewhere between the shift arm and 1/2 shift fork. Could be a worn out interlock.

Synchros have nothing to do with the shifter popping out of gear.

Well a bent shift fork would give you those symptoms, but it would have to be bend upward for the shifter to pop out of gear. And since first and second gear share the same shift fork, you'd be experiencing problems with first gear as well.

The shift shaft rotates the interlock which moves the rods up and down. I'm still thinking there is a problem with the interlock (they wear out) which is causing the shift fork to disengage.

If it is the linkage how long have you been driving it like that ?
it might already be damaged?
From what i seen if it keeps poping out of gear its either your shift fork fingers are dramitcaly worn or the gear selector teeth are worn down. When the gear selector wear happens you should have been grinding gears for a long time already.

if it was the linkage you would have some sort of problem with more then 1 gear.
I recomend you do check the linkage first. Replace your fluid with syncromesh, maybe. There is the posibilty the linkage was damaged some how and damaged your tranny. Or you can buy my Y8 tranny (shamless plug)
good luck with your tranny man.
