Default Oil where oil shouldn't be

So I just picked up a "grind free" L3 Si transmission to replace my dx unit and there is quite a bit of oil built up in the bell housing. I would assume that its coming from the main shaft area, possibly the seal for the main shaft.

How easy is this to replace? Will I have to crack the case open or is it just like replacing the axel seals? Has anyone done this before?

it is quite nasty to replace, cracking the case open and removing both shafts. also remember it could be the engines rear main oil seal leaking as well

Built up grime is to be expected in a 15+ year old tranny. Unless it's enough where it looks like there is a serious problem, just clean it off and move on.

I'm not sure how to determine if its a serious problem or not. I didn't get to see the engine that it came off of either. I would say that it looks about like the outside of my engine block after 15 years of built up oil got on it. Its probably 1/8th inch thick with oil or so.
