please explain how a motor locks up
Locks up usually means does not spin freely (or at all). Its a pretty generalized term, like blowing a motor. Doesnt define what exactly is wrong, just that it doesnt spin like its supposed to.

He's talking about (I think) when a motor seizes(sp?). This happens as pple said lack of lube (bogs up crank into a goo) and/or throwing a rod restricting the crank from moving or something to that effect. Depending on what actually seized in the motor determines if the motor's shot or not. Like a hydrolock will assfuck the block where as bad lube might only fry your rings and you can probably rebuild it...
I understood what he meant, but there are too many possibilities to sit and list out of why a motor wouldn't spin. I mean it could be anything from a frozen distributor bearing, out of round or tight mains, incorrect bearing clearances, something dropped into the cylinder, bent valve, broken rod, pistons rusted in the bore. There are alot of spinning parts in the motor and it only takes 1 to bind. And when I say the motor siezes, I mean the motor wont spin freely by hand. In some of these cases, even with a shot bearing, you can probably force it to spin with the starter. Wouldn't be very smart though.
A hydrolock is subjective to the ammount of water that ends up in the engine, sometimes it will only bend a rod and not assfuck the motor.
