Default blown motor is tranny messed up????

ok this happened to my friend hes got a type r motor in a hatch he was racing a car he was redlining 3rd gear and then by accident went to 2nd and the rpms flew past 12,000 rpms on the tach way past it. then the motor shut off. so he towed it and took apart the head and saw clylinder 3 was done. the pistons shattered in pieces and the head is useless now, cause it left a imprint on the head and messed up every single valve in the head. ne way so my question is do u think the tranny could as well be messed up when it went into the wrong gear cause of all the revs?

Take it apart and check to see if everything is within spec. That's really the only way he'll know for sure.

he's planning on dropping a b16 for now to get him around until he get another motor. If the itr tranny works fine ( don't grind or anything) does that mean the tranny is good without taking it apart? or take it apart anyway. I ask him how it happen and he said he doesn't know if he missed shifted into second or the car just did not go into gear and he floored it and he engine reved up to 12000rpm. Would that still mess the tranny up if it was not in gear? He was at the top of 3rd gear at 8600 when this overeving happen.

Rev limiters do nothing to protect your motor if you downshift from 3rd to 2nd at top rpm.

rev limiter prevents over revving ONLY when you dont downshift

so the fact that he rev to 12000 rpm that means he really did go from 3rd to 2nd? Well his motor is gone, but he just want to find out if the tranny is damage also. Is it hard to take the tranny apart? If the tranny is taken apart can he see if there are damages?
