Default Bad rings what caused this? Pics

Hi all,

Check out sparkplug hold #2 from the cam gears:

I bought this swap off a local guy but when I went to change the valvecover gasket, I noticed this.

I am going to have a friend check the compression for me. I just wanted to know if bad rings are the only possibility.

Thanks

I did a tune up on my 95 the other day and 2 of the plugs had oil on it.

You are right. The plug was loose.

What does that mean though? Major damage to the engine?

I am not sure if all the oil over the engine/valve cover was caused by it. Do you think so?

The limited edition H22 redtop.

Since this issue isn't engine specific, I figured I would try to see what you guys think.

The oil was most likely from something else. If you had that much oil in the cylinders your motor would be fubared' I had this happen to me once and there was no damage as a result.

looks like an sr to me....

the plug being loose probably just filled that spark plug hole with soot....i doubt that it did any real damage inside

get that compression test done, if its bad, do a leakdown test and let us know how it comes out

Considering the TB is facing the pullies, im 99.999% sure that's not any Honda motor.

I just wanted to check. I didn't want to swap it in only to find out the cylinder is bad.

I'll do a compression test on it and see.

Thanks for the help, guys!! That's why i posted here.

Unless there are major problems with that one cylinder then the oil probably came from somewhere else like the valve cover gasket. The only real issues with running a loose spark plug generally long term. If the electrical ground for the spark was in the threads instead of the gap, then it can errode the threads making them weaker. Another issue is the possitive pressure/negative pressure effect on the loose plug can have it rattle back and forth and ruin threads that way too. If you have a factory torque spec I would torque it a few times in succession to make sure that it is not stripped.

That's the first thing I thought when I noticed the plug was loose. I have heard of stories there the spark plug shoots out and tears off the threads in the head.

The substance over the coilpack/in the spark plug chamber is not oil. It is more of a grimey soot substance, like you all mentioned.

I'll clean it up as well as I can and put it all back together. I hope it is ok. If not, it won't be TOOOO big of a deal. The guy gave me a great deal on it.

Thanks for the help, all.

Oh, here are pics of what the engine looked like when I got it. I was just about to start cleaning it:

See all the oil/grime around the intake ports? It's all cleaned up now though.

well it was still firing, so it was most likely just burning oil onto that metal, im sure the loose plug was leaking combustion at least slightly into that spark plug "hole"

Finally getting the 240 project underway eah ?

i ended up selling mine to my gf lol.

I still got **** tons of SR parts as mine is sitting in a giant box all tore down.

I concur with everyone else as well.. loose plug. If it were oil an old or messed up plug gasket would do the same type of thing.
