My rev meter has gone crazy... how to fix? HELP PLEASE
Ok. Just recently, my rev counter has been acting up.
Ranndomly it would just stop working and sit as if the cars engine was off.. And then only when you rev it hard it would go crazy and jump up and down.
Is there a sensor which is going or something? On older cars things can wear and tear so is there something that has to be changed?
Thanks
Josh

ok striker....99% of the time when the ignitor is on its way out it causes the tach to read incorrectly or not work at all. i experienced this personally and it just so happens when i changed the ignitor, the tach worked again.

99% of the time when the ignitor is on its way out your car will operate normally until you shut the engine off. Then, the engine will not to turn over. Thus, you will be stuck until for some odd miracle it turns over and your car starts up.
As for a tach going crazy, it could be two possibilities:
a) tach is f'ed up so u must replace it.
or
b) VSS has gone bad but that would also affect the speedometer so ehh not so sure really

You can always ignore my advices though. Afterall, it's been a year since i've driven a 92-05 civic model

Get a clue. All of what you said is false.

No. If the car is operating perfectly fine and the tach is going nuts it has nothing to do with the ignitor.

Incorrect. I've seen a few friends hondas (including my own crx) ignitors go bad, and the FIRST indication of the problem was the car shutting off randomly and not restarting again for a minute or two. I think it's better he follows your last point and ignores your 'advices'
But as for what the problem actually is, honestly I can't be too sure. So i wont just pull something out of my *** and tell you thats what the problem is. Does the car have any problems running or is it an isolated problem, relating only to the tach? speedo and temp guage never just drop do they? Please dont go blowing money on an ignitor, which will run you about 80 bucks if i remember correctly.

all the **** you just told thid guy is wrong, and i had the EXACT thing happen to me on my own car so i think i would know what his problem is. my car was operating perfectly normal besides the tach going wild, then one day it just didnt want to start, i replaced the ignitor and it was fine and my tachometer began working normal again.
I bet if you replace the ignitor your problem will go away. and if you take my advice make sure you post again and update us all.

you guys are forgetting one point. His car is an older model until we know what year it is, we won't know what the problem is.
Ignition coil is bad when your car won't start after you shut off the engine.
If it doesn't start for a min or two then it's your battery being bad.
If your battery is fine but your car won't start and your coil is good then it's your alternator.
If you guys have ever replaced a cluster then you'd know but as far as I'm seeing all you have done is add oil to your engine as a major repair. But who cares right? you're pro mechanics

Uh....yeah actually I am a mechanic...and have been repairing cars for a living for over seven years. I usually shy away fom negative posts with this kind of tone, but this kind of misinformation really bugs me!!!
Please, no more bullshit...you have no idea what you are talking about. It has already been stated that ignitors commonly cause this problem, which is very true!

yeah make the poor guy go change his ignitor then he'll come back and tell us it's doing the same thing...
Oh big pro mechanics...
the hint your ignition coil goes bad is when your car won't start again and everything seems fine.
Car uses the battery juice to start up then the alternator takes its job and at the sametime it charges the battery...
those are the basics...
but heck I'm a joke i guess...
And to the orignial guy with the problem:
take it to a mechanic if u have no idea what you're doing or how to take out the cluster, get it checked since everyone here is guessing or else you will be spending over 300 on fixing a problem where it could be just a bad connection/ground.
