Default Tranny question, help needed.

hey guys, i own a 94 gsr and the tranny has just crapped out and i am just curious to the advantages/disadvantages to replacing it with a B16B tranny with LSD. i was leaning towards a type r tranny but they are so damn hard to find. A local guy here in ottawa is selling a B16B tranny and i just wanted to know if its worth it or am i actually down grading? any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanx alot guys.

start driving
you stick left arm out window

You get LSD and shorter ratios. Enough said.

You probably dont want the b16 tranny if u do alot of highway driving because at like 75 mph u will be around 4200 rpms.

the shorter rations are awesome unless you do a lot of crusing on the high way a 80youll be at about 4500 rpms but the lsd would make me get that tranny

First off, I would stick with the same tranny, but add lsd to it. It will dramatically help traction and still maintain driveability. But......whats wrong with the tranny? Did you break a gear?
I would crack open your GSR and put in the LSD from the CTR. People are afraid of tranny's and they shouldent be. A standard tranny is actuially easier to work on then an auto. Take the case apart, and look at the gear sets. if the gears arent cracked or chipped, and the syncros are ok, then your problem may be in the differential. In which case, get the tranny, remove the lSD from it and install it in the gsr tranny. to Install an lsd is easy.

1) open up the transmission case.
2) remove bearing thust washer from the diff shaft.
3) unbolt the diff from the carrier assemblie.
4) unbolt the final drive gear.
5) install final drive gear from CTR tranny
6) bolt diff to carrier assembly
7) bolt carrier assembly to final drive gear
8) re install the bearing and thrust washer
9) bolt case back together.

To make sure that you have done it correctly, install the axels with the tranny still out of the car. turn one, if the other axel spins in the same direction, your in business, if not, take it back apart, and figure out what you missed.

ETA: Bolting the final drive gear from the CTR will change the final drive ratio, so you will get a lil more acceleration. Not as much as you would with a ctr tranny, but you wont be cruising at 4500rpm either

nice. thanks alot for that info. i never even thought about puttin an lsd in the stock tranny. oh, and im not quite sure what is wrong with my tranny. i took it to a shop because it was making a noise and the mechanic said i needed a new clutch. so i went out and bought a centerforce dual friction clutch kit and when i went to pick up the car after the clutch was installed the noise was still there. then he told me i needed a new tranny. i dunno, its very frustrating and i just want it fixed because the noise it terrible. ps when the car is idling the noise it noticeable but once i push the clutch the noise stops.

You are truly clueless. You cannot simply change the final drive ratio by replacing only the ring gear. Don't post what you do not know.

To the OP, keep your B16B transmission in tact and install it that way. If you want to add an LSD to your GSR transmission, buy an ITR or CTR unit from Ebay and install that, keeping your 4.40:1 ring gear. Do not ruin a perfectly good transmission to make a Frankenstein.

The quoted post is wrong in SO many ways. You need to properly shim a differential when you build a transmission. I have personally done this. Read this thread:

Too bad the pictures no longer work.

BTW: the CTR and USDM ITR transmission are identical. Both have the 4.40:1 final drive ratio.

ok, so essentially if i buy this b16b trannny from this local guy i am basically buying a ITR tranny? these two tranny's share the same gear ratios and everything? i am only asking because i will be driving the car alot in the city and highway and dont really like the fact that if i put a sir tranny in i will be cruising at 120km/h at over 4000 rpm.

In your original post, you said

You found one. It won't rev that high. It's not like your putting this transmission an LS.
