Default d16z6 engine build...plastigage results

Ok i am using the sealed power "green" plastigage from 0.001 to 0.003 inch

After putting a green strip accross each of the 5 main journals
and torquing in the helms manual specific pattern (first to 18 footpounds and then to 38..went to 40 footpounds)

On the 2, 3, 4 journals,,,the thickness equated to the 0.002 '' clearance line on the plastigage reference paper.

On the 1 and 5 journals..even though as far as I know that all 10 bolts are supposed to be torqued to 38 ftlb's, I also got 0.002''

IN the helms manual its states that the for standard main bearings the clearance for 1,5 journals should be 0.0007- 0.0014 ''

and for 2,3,4 0.0019 - 0.0017 inches and it says service limit is 0.002''(i dont know what the service limit means)

also while doing this the crank is naked as in the flywheel is off and so it the crank gear and the connecting rod/piston assembly is not in yet either. I dont know if this affects my values but the THRUST BEARINGS ARENT INSTALLED YET.....
FOr the values I did the test twice...as in i cleaned off the plastigage after the first time and did the same procedure and still got 0.002''

These are TAIHO bearings manufactored in Japan and there were no 'colour' codes or anything on the bearings..they all had the same stamping

Are these clearance measurements ok atleast for the 2,3,4 journals or could this slight difference result in bad things...?

You're not going to be able to use the one-size-fits-most bearings. Service limit means the bearings need to be replaced. No point in building a motor with bearings that are already at their service limit. You'll need OEM Honda bearings. Black should give you .0016", blue should give you .0014" and one black half with one blue half should give you .0015". Buy one set and Plastigage again.

ok thanks for the reply....also..the code on my block for its crank is DCBBC...BUT I still dont know how to use the colour code chart.
And when you say a set...u mean 10 black and 10 blue and how much do those usually run in price from honda?

ok after some reading and research this is what I gathered

*oh yeah almost forgot...Speaking from the pulley side of the crank...in between the 2nd connecting rod journal and the 3rd main journal....there is a "4" stamped on the rough part of crank

so basically im thinking that for whatever LETTER there is without a number following it....then you assume the number is 1.
so for the pulley end the first main journal code is b2....so would that mean yellow
and the second journal code from the pulley side says 2...so would i also assume that if it doesnt have a letter with the number then its A...if so then that would mean pink

so lets saythe first main journal code is b2 which i believe would be yellow.....so lets say it is supposed to be yellow but the plastigage reveals that its still too loose and needs to be tighter...so then i would according to the chart move to green as it is one step thicker which would result in the tighter clearance and hopefully the correct clearance...i think im on the right track

Or am i way off.....all i want is to know what colours of bearings i need to buy...if someone can tell me that(even though 2 bearings of the same colour cost $60 according to honda) i will be happy as i just spent $130+ on the wrong connecting rod bearings and main bearings...damn i hope the generic z6 thrust bearings are atleast ok to use

Ok, from what you posted I got Brown, Green, Yellow, Yellow, Green. But you say you Plastigaged all five journals at .002" with greens? I'd take the block and crank to a shop and let a professional take measurments then use the bearing thickness scale that Earl posted (it's on this forum) to find the right sized bearings for what you need. You shouldn't have come out with .002" on all five journals. There should have been two that spec'd out fine, two tight, and one loose...but they should've all been within spec.

HEHE...IM RETARDED.....i looked at it again and i got it

DCBBC is the code stamped on block for that crank..and all of the #'s are 2 so I have to look at the "2" line on the chart horizontally
-the line reads pink.yellow.green.brown...and my letter portion of the code is DCBBC so D= brown C=green B= Yellow B= Yellow C=green

You said they are Taiho bearings made in Japan? If so, they are OEM bearings--look on the side of the bearing shell--you should see an actual dab of color like yellow, red, green, brown....
