Default K-series rocker arms in B-series?

This is something I've been wondering about for a while now.

Has anyone here experimented with the possibility of using the K-series' roller rocker arms in a B-series VTEC motor?

I've always wished I could afford some custom-made roller-rockers for my B-series, but that is not something I ever expect to be able to do. The cost would outweigh the benefits by far. But I do wonder if the spacing between the rocker arms is similar enough between the two engines, and if the B-series has enough clearance, to use K-series roller-rockers.

I don't really expect it to work, but I'm still curious. Since I don't have the parts just lying around to make the comparison myself, I thought I'd as if this has crossed anyone else's mind here.

I seem to remember a thread in the allmotor forum - probably in the archives by now.

Somebody was trying this out and it was pretty good in terms of compatibility.

The downside is that the angles are all off, so you'd need some custom cams, iirc.....

weight is one of the issues as is the parasitic drag.

rollers will also let you run some very wild cam profiles too, or atleast with some pretty aggressive ramp rates.

Ah, I was afraid the angles might present a problem, due to the thicker profile of the K-series rocker.

But yes, roller rocker arms allow for reduced friction (parasitic drag) in the valve train and often result in improved wear characteristics. Some old domestic V-8s respond to such a mod by belching out an extra 10+ hp. On a B-series, I wouldn't expect more than 2-3 hp., but in engineering terms it's simply a better way to do things.

Some engines don't use rocker arms at all, instead employing shims and tappets. I believe Toyota's 2JZ-GTE is an example of such a motor. The benefit of this kind of setup is eliminating weight from the valvetrain, allowing for higher operating rpm. Motorcycle engines also often use such a setup.

Doesn't Toda or someone make a roller-rocker conversion kit? I believe they mated up with the 'vtec killer' cams.

Yes, but I don't want VTEC Killers.

Web makes a roller rocker kit, and offers custom grinds.

Sweet.

Is their setup VTEC-compatable? Actually, I suppose I should look for myself....

[e] just looked at Web Camshafts' site. The only rocker arms I saw there were not roller rockers, but improved versions of the stock ones. Plus they require the elimination of VTEC.

No. Toda removes the vtec function, but still uses rocker arms that do not employ rollers.....

Ferrea is the mfr that comes to mind wrt roller rockers and custom cams to suit them.

If you're going to use rollers, might as well just get the Ferrea setup. Benefits would be better without the added reciprocating weight. More oil available for the bottom end as well.
