Default Hub nut WONT come off. Need help.

First off I'm not sure if this would go in the suspension forum or this one. Since this one seems to have more traffic I put it in here. Anyway the day started with plans of a clutch swap....nothing too major. My friend was comming to help me and I thought Id get things started by jacking the car up and getting the suspension crap outta the way and the axle out. After the wheels came off it was time for the Hub nut. My uncle happened to be there so I told him to hit the brakes so the hub wouldnt turn and I gave it my all with just a 1/2" ratchet...nothing. I decided to try it with a 12 inch cheater....nothing. Well I said expletive it and Id wait until Sean got there with his bigger cheater lol. He gets there and we try it with my half inch ratchet and broke the bastard and the 1/2" square part. We then made sure that the nut was bent out all of the way at the stake point....or whatever you wanna call it. Sean took the dremel and cut the lip off of that to make sure that wasnt causing a problem. He also had a brand new hub nut with him that I was going to use. At the same time I welded the part that broke off of the ratchet onto a huge piece of 2", 3 1/2' long steel pipe. We tried it again and it sheared the end off right where the ball bearing snaps into the socket. Next we drench the nut with liquid wrench and let it soak for a while and went and got lunch. We came back and tried putting a cheater on his 1/2" breaker bar.......it snapped. WHAT THE expletive!!!! Who put this bitch on? This is insane. We then go to his house and get the 33 gallon compressor and the impact tools....again letting the nut soak in lube. We get back and it wont budge with the impact gun. It's only rated at 230ft lbs so we call a friend with a shop and ask him if we can use his. He said yea but he's busy now and will call us later when he can go by the shop. In the meantime, we try and heat that ****** up to see if that will work, knowing that the axle will probably expand with the nut but it was worth a try. Again nothing. Then I take that same piece of pipe, drill 2 holes on each side, clean it up and we weld a 1/2" 6 inch extension in it. I was thinking the other one was still very hot because right after I welded it, I quenched it then immediately used it. So We welded it up, let it cool by itself and what do you think happened? Sheared it off. 1/2" steel just snapped and looked like it was cut with a bandsaw. Well finally our friend calls and we go pick up the other impact gun which is rated at over 300ft lbs. We even tried that at 30psi over what it's rated at and nothing. So what can I possibly do? We tried a standard and a 12 point socket, 2 different impact guns on 120psi and broke 3 breaker bars and a 1/2" ratchet. I apologize for the long post but I want it to be clear that we've tried everything in our power to get this damn thing off. It's like Jesus personally put this nut on and blessed it to never come off. So after 8 hours of bullshit we got absolutely NOTHING done and my brand new clutch and resurfaced flywheel are sitting here staring me in the face. If anyone has any advise please help. Oh yea...I bought the car about a month and a half ago and havent touched it besides making an new exhaust....so I dont know how this nut was put on.

Yea...today was a TOTAL waste. I have never seen an axle nut that was such a bitch. We arent rookies with hondas...weve both been working on them for the past 5 years and have done basically anything you can think of. But weve never ran into anything like this. This clutch install shouldve taken 4hrs MAX...and after 8hrs we had only managed to get the wheel off We tried EVERYTHING that we could think of to get it off, but nothing worked. We tried heat, penetrating oil, various cheaters hooked to breaker bars and ratchets, and two impact guns. If 350ft/lbs cant break it lose then i dont know what will.

I think that the only thing we accomplished today was breaking a 1/2 drive ratchet, 3 different preaker bars, 2 screwdrivers, a weightlifting bar, and my knee...but thats a different story If anyone has any suggestions id love to hear them!

1000ft/lbs is insane I dont think hes wanting to spend another $300 to get this done though. Well probably just drill a few holes in the nut then use the air hammer to break it off. Ive got a couple extra axle nuts, so it should be fine if we dont mess up the threads on the axle itsself.

We heated it up and let it cool atleast 15 times throughout the day...if not more. Youd think that 350ft/lbs would be more than enough to break it lose...but we held the gun on there for atleast 20min total andit didnt do a damn thing. And thats after using a 230ft/lb gun on it for 30-45min. Like i said...we might just try to break it off and hope for the best. Either that or just leave the nut on and try to work around it. We were thinking of unhooking the hub and pulling the axle out with it still attached to it.

Were still open for other suggestions though

350lb/ft rating for a 1/2" drive impact gun is quite low. Your basic Ingersol Rand impact is about 600lb/ft.

Enough about impacts, my personal experience with my recent tranny change and axle nut:
1) IR 2135 (rated at max of 1000lb/ft) did nothing.
2) Put the car on the ground with the wheel on. Pop off the center cap and insert your socket and breaker bar.
3) Get someone to step on the brakes.
4) Insert you cheater on the breaker (I used a 3' cheater) with the bar horizontal (level with the ground).
5) Stand on the cheater, use your buddy's shoulder to steady yourself.
6) Bounce a bit on the bar (don't jump or else you'll break something) and it should come loose.

If that doesn't work take it to somewhere that has a 3/4" impact.

We went to Lowes yesterday and they had 3 IR impact guns...the highest rating of them was 600ft/lbs. The other two were 250 and 350 i believe. Where did you get yours? I dont think that hell get one for this...but i might sell my other two and buy one of those for future BS like this

I stood on a 3 1/2' cheater and it didnt do ****. I dont think that a cheater is gonna help us though. Like i said...weve already broke a 1/2" ratchet and 3 breaker bars(one of which was 3 1/2" long ). The 1/2" drive is the weak link right now. A 3/4" breaker would be nice...but i still wouldnt put too much faith in it at this point. Drews a hoss and hes been snapping breaker bars left and right

Taking it somewhere like you metioned might be a good idea though. We could have them break it lose...then snug it back on and take it to his house and finish ourselves. The hard part is gonna be finding a place thatll do it. Most shops wont wanna do just that...theyll wanna do it all. If not then teyll prolly charge an hours labor. Most places around here charge an hour minumum

Yea when we broke the breaker bars it wasnt because of a sudden jolt. I was pulling slowly until I was giving it my all and then it snapped. What Id really like to do is find out who actually put the nut on and use a breaker bar on their face because there's no reason for anything on that car to be that tight. I mean the damn crank pulley nut isnt even that tight.

spray that bold down real good.... heat it up but dont let it cool down... get a buddy of yours to sit in the car and step on the brakes so that the axle wont spin..put a socket..32 mm. i think... with a breaker bar and a pipe.... and try to stand on it or give it a quick jump. it should break loose...

lol .... i had the same thing happen to me. 3 breaker bars, 2 diff impact wrenches, 2 welded bars etc. ...

i finally figured since i had a new nut to replace it with that i could go ahead and chisel that bitch off!! so i did. presto.... axle was free to come off. i just chiseled that nut off, took about 15-20 mins of chiseling to get it, when i was done, it looked like that guy on terminator 2 when arnold slices him in half .... hope it helps...

Yea that's the plan we have right now. I guess it's the only other thing to do. I just hope we dont damage the axle by accident.

ADVICE.... EVAR!!!

the other two pieces of advice I can offer are...

1) put the tires back on, drive to the nearest truck stop/diesel repair shop and have them loosen it with their 3/4" impact. You will need to STAND on the brakes with the engine running for the vacuum booster. Trust me, it'll either loosen the nut or it'll flip your car over. Retighten the old nut or the new nut just enough to get you home.

2) Go to Agri-Supply/Harbor Freight/Northern Tool/etc and buy a 3/4" breaker bar, socket, and 6' of pipe. Use appropriately and that should do the trick.

Hope it all works out and good luck with that.

Didn't read the thread, but I had the same problem on an old 92 Legend yesterday. I used 3/4" drive air rated at 1200ft/lbs. and the nut wouldn't come off, so I got a die grinder and cut the nut as far in as I could, then I got a chisel and broke the rest off.

Yea i guess thats what were gonna do. I feel better about it now that i know other people have done it How did you guys break them off? I was thinking about drilling a few holes in the nut and using an air hammer to just break it apart. Im sure it could work without the holes...but i dont know what grade that nut is so it might be a major bitch.

And holy ****...if a 1200ft/lb 3/4" drive impact wouldnt get it then something was seriously wrong there. Was it crossthreaded on there or was it rusted to it or something? I wonder if well find something like that when we get his off
