question about requirement for helmets at tracks...
so I was browsing the nesba requirements for helmets and they list it as
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">helmet, fullface DOT, Snell, or European standard approved, with eye protection.</TD></TR></TABLE>
also no flip up helmets but how is that interpreted... I interpret it to be DOT AND snell or some european standard. But the wording is kind've weird so I'm left thinking wtf do they mean it just has to have any of the 3?? I mean mine is dot and snell but I'd like to pick up a few new lids... Specifically the Duhamel shark which is DOT and ECE 22-05 (i'm assuming that's a european standard and is ok...)

It'd be nice to know if it's ok to buy before I get a $500 lid. I'm assuming it is but not all the time are assumptions correct....
anyone know off hand if those are ok?

I thought helmets (to be legal) were only required to be DOT approved, and Snell and everything else was just a bonus?
I don't think they actually go through and check every peice of your gear anyway, I know that's not the point, I'm just saying.

Most require dot plus snell or euro.
Some organizations do make you tech with your helmet to make sure it meeets their standards.

Nobody's checked when I've been out on a bike. If you know anything about motorcycles, though, it only takes a cursory glance to recognize a helmet.
On that note, though, before somebody makes the "motorcycle sanctioning bodies suck!" cry, nobody's ever checked my helmet before going out on track with NASA.

All the times I've been to the track no one has worried about helmets. Cmon now, who is going to be stupid enough to use an unsafe helmet at a race track. If you do then you don't have much to protect.
DOT means nothing to me other than it needs it to be legal. DoT do no testing of helmets themselves, its up to the manufacturer to insure that it mets DOT standards, so basically its a DOT approval by faith. Snell, BSI, and ECE actually do real tests on the helmets in order to approve them. BSI goes a step further and buys their test helmets from stores to ensure they are getting a market helmet not a special helmet direct from the manufacturer.

Flip-up helmets are generally not rated beyond DOT. They do not have enough crush protection in the chin area. I believe there are one or two flip-up helmets that DO meet this standard, but a full face still gives you better overall protection.
