I've noticed since I got the car there is always black dust on the top part of my bumper (back). I always wash it off. I just waxed it and cleaned it.
Looks suppper shinny and now i am noticing the black dust is a huge layer after 40km of driving !!!
I know its 40Km I reset it after i cleaned it and changed the tranny fluid.

Could it be that i am running rich?

 

black spots on rear bumper usualy means burning oil

 

Mine was doing the same thing, bottom end needed a rebuild, I just got a new motor.

 

You could be running rich or you could be burning oil. It is accumulating really quickly though it sounds like, so check your oil often. If you don't have a catalytic converter, that will accelerate the amount of carbon accumulating if you are running rich. Check your oil daily , or after the car is warmed up stand behind it and have a friend hit the gas, if there is blue smoke... there is burned oil.

I just changed my oil (to castrol gtx 5-30w) and i just checked my oil level in my garage (pretty level) and its 1 level over !

Could that be it?

It sounds like you are burning oil and if you are running synthetic oil your car will burn more of it.

 

he leaked a little oil and now its a little over level.

I am running Castrol GTX 5-30W. Have been running it for a while.
Only thing i've done is add a ShortRam intake (Ebay cheapo thingy) and changed my spark plugs to G-power NGK and Changed Tranny Fluid.

 

I never understood the entire 5W30 in Winter and 10W30 in Summer. Why?

I know 5W30 is thinner but isn't that better because it goes more every where to cool the engine?


its getting cooler here now (I am in Canada, Montreal) by next month I wont be surprized if we'll see snow

 

i have the same probleme. i changed the valve seals but that didnt help. its either pistons rings or some of my valve guides. im running a little rich aswell.

Yes. If you overfilled the oil sump, you are guaranteed to burn oil until the excess burns off or until you drain it out.

Since you're in Montreal, just stick with 5W-30 year round. 5W-30 multi-viscosity oil flows slightly easier than 10W-30 in cold temperatures, allowing the oil to circulate faster during startup. When the oil is warm, they both have the same viscosity (hence the 30).

And exactly how do you think you have accurately diagnosed this as bad rings by simply reading about black dust on a rear bumper over the internet with no other details?

 

hahahahahaha..... i thought this thread was a joke
seriously though, overfilling your oil means you have to much oil in your crankcase. It has to go somewhere so it pushes harder on your seals, maybe causing leaks, and it can push past your rings too, causing you to burn oil, resulting in a carbon buildup throughout your whole exhaust and rear bumper. duh.

had te exact same prob with my eg
ill post pics tonite
it got really bad
i checked oil swapped visc and it still dusted
i checked and was running a little rich adj and still smk
pulled my motor apart (4 a turbo build) and the rings were pretty much gone
just my 2 cents from personal exp

 

If I do a compression test would that show if my rings are gone?

99 Civic Ex (Canadian SI) is suppose to be 185 i think? +-10 per cyclinder?

Is there a way to clean the carbon buildup ??

Up here, I don't know about the majority of you guys lving down there, but Honda recommends 5W20 year round.
