Harness + No Cage Topic.....
I found this very interesting as it was covered in the ITR Expo topic.
I figured it deserved it's own topic.
I would like to get everyone's opinion on having a harness and no cage for Solo II events.
What about a 4 point and a harness? Not enough protection?
I have my own opinions about each of the above, but I was curious to see what everyone else thinks.

To me, a 4-point rollbar is sufficient. However, running a harness with no rollover protection is stupid, in my opinion. Then again, who the hell am I?

All in all, a harness with no cage is a bad idea; obviously if you were to roll, the harness would cause servere injury because you would be held there as the roof crushed inward.
However, some people want the harness to help hold them in better while driving, which I can understand.
In the end, do whatever you want, but be aware of the possible consequences involved as a result of what you decide.

Its great to have, just hope nobody ever has to use on.

For autox, I would do it. Only because I don't think there is significant risk involved at those speeds.
For anything more, no.
Anyways I refuse to buy harnesses until I have a 4 pt. bar on order, just to be safe. I realize a 4 pt w/ harnesses is still not a cage and presents some risk, albeit much less then no bar at all. However, I'm a short guy so the roof's far from my melon anyways....

So even in Solo II events you all feel that some sort of roll over protection is a good idea if you plan to use a harness....
Interesting.
Good discussion - keep it coming.

Do what you want, but don't expect me to feel sorry for you when they spray your blood off the track when you roll over and get your head shoved out your *** by the roof.
I suggest to all those I know that track their cars to put cages in them, I try.
-Dave, who thinks anyone using a harness without proper (6-point preferred) rollover protection deserves a Darwin Award.. in fact We-Todd-Did-Racing will make the awards for the expo.

I don't think your life is worth risking so you are a little more planted in the seat. Just push hard on that dead pedal and you will get all the planting you need for auto-x. track is anouther story....

I use a harness with no cage for autocross and autocross only. I have heard of VW or other HS cars flipping in autocross with R-compound tires, but I believe I am safe in the ITR.
As for the expo, I will use the lap belt of the harness and my regular seat-belt at the most. I will do the first few sessions without the lap belt, but if I am sliding too much then I will use it.
My question is that since we are not racing, why risk using a harness without a roll cage?

harness? at LEAST get a bolt in rollbar. please.
autox, street or track, get a rollbar at LEAST.
I did in my hatch. its so simple. harnesses are great to drive in, they make steering feedback so much more perceptible and the connection to the car so solid, the joy of driving with a harness made me want to drive like that daily, so I went ahead and got a rollbar. life is good and I want to keep it that way
No head injuries for me please

Also remember, roll cages are not the best in a daily driver. As you can realy rack your head in an accident on the uper bar if you don't have a helmet on. Just wanted to keep you all informed.
Craig - Who is still getting a cage even thouse its a daily driver.

The cars that seem to flip in Solo II are usually the ones with stock ride heights and R compounds... a lot of grip and a high center of gravity and your car tends to topple over instead of gripping the ground. Doh.
Altho' E30 M3s are lengendary for flipping over either way...
