Default First timer, but a big project....1995 civic (kinda Long)

Hey everyone how are ya? I'm gonna need some help over the next few months, and Maybe I found the right spot to start looking. I currently drive a 98 mustang GT (ew, bad llama!) But my next project is in fact a 95 civic. Why? It has nice body lines that look good with killer wings or without. Wheel choices for these cars are astronomical in numbers. And finally(the fun part) the engines are the next thing(i think any way, with less cubes but more cams and lots of RPMS) A little bit about this car, It's a junker right now, the whole front end was trashed(engine is good, but it's gotta to go 1.5 sohc) So right now I'm at a good starting point to add in whatever I want right? I've been talking with some not so knowledgable guys around here that think the 1.8 vtec or 2.2 vtec would be the way to go, however the 2.2 is some 70 lbs heavier i think? Now being a turd for weight loss (my mustang is a PIG) I would think the the 1.8 would be a better starting platform right? or is the extra weight of the 2.2 offset be what else you can do to this car? Anyway, once a block is figured out, I'm going to fill it with the internals that arent afraid of boost or RPM(again help here is needed) and a turbo will be on this car by the end of its life. I have set a time limit(money permittinf) and right now I'd like to have it completed be December or January. Thanks so much for your time and input!

K im gonna make this really short and simple. 2 best choices will be either a gsr or ls engine. If your going the turbo route for sure Choose the ls engine. Its a 1.8L without vtec but if you decide to go all motor you could always throw a vtec head on that. LS engines are nice because without vtec you get lower compresion. Then get yourself a drag3/revhard turbo kit. Along with a standalone (hondata) and bigger injectors. Next build it with je/endyn/arias/srp/ross pistons I prefer JE and for rods def go eagle or crower. Eagles are mad cheap (www.gropbuycenter.com) Wanna take it further send your block out to GE (golden eagle) have them bore it and sleeve it. Then TUNE IT. Do not forget to tune. This was to long IM DONE.

If you plan to boost go with B18C1 (GSR), B18B (LS), or B20B (CRV).

The LS will most likely be the cheapest, but if you plan to do internals anyway you might as well opt for a CRV.

There is a chap in ATL that has a boosted B20B in a 5g hatch that put down 250whp.

H22 is a nice motor, but if you plan to do a turbo you are not going to have much room in the engine bay for all the plumbing.

I assume you are going to use this car for drag racing. If that is the case then I wouldn't be worried about an additional 70lbs in the front end.

If you are planning on using it for autocross or roadracing I would skip the boosting all together and build a nice all motor (N/A) B18C1.

Go here to see some details on the later choice...

Good luck.

Mostly that's what I'd like to do, is just drag race, but not to the point that it's not street friendly. What wouldn't matter with 70 lbs up front? Better traction I suppose? Again, I'm steeping in a whole new direction here But I do appreciate greatly your time! One other thing I'm trying to learn here is: What's with all these: B18C1, B18B, B20B and H22. I'm almost assuming that the 18 stands for 1.8 and 20 stands for 2.0 and I guess the H22 is a 2.2. Are all of these Honda motors, or are some of the the Acura variant?

They're all Honda engine codes.
B18B1 = LS/GS/RS Integra Motor
B18C1 = GSR Integra motor
H22A = Prelude VTEC motor
B20B = Honda CRV motor

And yes the numbers refer to displacement.. good assumption.

I would agree with what the others said, get an LS motor and turbo it. Depending on how much money you have, you might want to bore it out to 2.0 and resleeve it, giving you better torque AND protection for more boost.

Uh.. how much money DO you have to spend?

If i were you, go with a b20.....it's turbo friendly, and if you go all motor, a VTEC head onto a b20 block (CR-VTEC) will put out about 200 hp and (correct me if i'm wrong) approx. 227 ft/lb torque...... but to each his own, so do what ya want...

Ju$+iN

p.s. go to crvtec.com if you want all the info on the cr-vtec.....go to b20vtec.com to get dyno numbers and even one guys track time goin all motor (12.45 @ 115 mph, i believe)....

local to me call stupid or impossible. I got a Ford, in a mostly Chevy environment. But with a variant of my stock block, my car won't see 12.45 N/A anytime soon(i think the quickest I've seen a 2v 4.6 is 12.53 so) No really, It's going to be a turbo civic. Now that I've found some helpful info and it seems to just keep coming and coming in! How much money do i plan to spend? Drivetrain wise? Is 10k unreasonable? That may seem like an unreal amount of money, but trust me, been there done that, or maybe late model stangs are just pricey....
So basically, I could just find a B20 motor out of a junk yard and look up golden eagle and have them do the bottom end? AS for headwork, Does anyone here DIY? I did a home port job on the stang and at the track we realized a .2 drop in ET. Are these heads much more intricate? I remember seeing somewhere(or talking with friends) that bullfrog<?> is bad *** with heads? Would this be best sent out to someone? I'm the type that likes to do most of the work myself, but again, I'm learning a whole new ball game now. Thanks!

Honda motors are pretty optimized from the factory. I would not spend a lot of time or money having head work done if you are going to put the motor under pressure. That would be one of the last places I would spend money.

Charles you are right on. Expect at least 10k if you do things correctly. Go get a decent B20 from a yard, have the bottom end redone with all new parts. You can get a turbo kit or build your own. Don't bother with the B20 tranny - try to find one from a B16A or B18C1 or B18C5. The gearing will be much better.

Plan on getting a Hondata to manage everything and a J&S Ultra Safeguard for knock control. You'll also want 440cc RC injectors and a Cartech FMU.

I know this may all sound like Japanese to you know, but print it out, and come back to it as you do your research.

Talk to coquinn on this board to learn about turboing a honda. Ask him for the Turbo FAQ series he posted on CSI. It was very good.

Good luck. Hit me up via email if you want more direct help.
