Default Reverse grinds.

I have a 91' EF civic coupe. Everytime I throw my car in reverse I grind the gears. The only way I can shift into reverse is unless I shift the gears really slow. I mean thats not a big problem for me to go slow, but sometimes I'm in a hurry and I shift quick when I'm backing up out of a driveway into a busy street. Please note that I am at a complete stop, and I am stepping on the brake. Any suggestions I should check out or replace?

Try putting it in first gear before reverse. Disengage 1st, then put it into reverse.

Either your clutch is wearing out or your not pressing the clutch pedal down all the way. When you turn your car off do you leave it in gear? If so, does your car ever roll when you do that? If so it's probably your clutch going out. My Reverse gear does the same thing until I lowered my idle speed and adjusted my clutch under the hood. (the mechanic told me that my clutch was bad, but this is what I did to hold me up) Hope that helps. Peace.

?? i think if it grinds when trying to put it in reverse it would be hitting something meaning that the clutch is good and trying to catch...

One thing about reverse is that it isn't synchro'd. I know I need to put it into 1st and then reverse sometimes. Other times, I have to put it in reverse and let out the clutch a little til it catches and slides right in. maybe try that, it has worked on all of my cars.

Yes I push the clutch all the way down and when I do leave my car in gear when I park it it doesn't roll, even on hills.

So it seems that my idle is too high? Can anyone tell me where I might be able to modify this? I'll check it out when I get home. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I usually go through a few gears before going into reverse, that usually helps my situation, but in my case it wont go in, it doesnt grind.

If you wait for a bit in neutral and wait for your synchros it should be fine. Mine grind all the time. I just put it back in neutral and wait for a couple of seconds.

There should be a screw that you adjust that has a spring behind it for the idle setting...What you want to do is run the car until your at a normal operating temperature then turn off all your electronics and make sure the ac or blower or anything like that is on and adjust the screw accordingly my car is an 88 DX and the idle speed is supposed to be around 675 to 775 rpms.

so if your cars in gear when you turn it off and it moves, that means that your clutch is going bad?

Hold the clutch for a second and then release it when you turn it off. Then it shouldn't move.

I started trying this recently. It really works well. Now i don't have to try to get it in gear 12 times, lol.

lol i kinda thought alot of people dont have a manual with their car. but it does say it right in there. so if reverse grinds your tranny isnt shot.. unless it still grinds after you put it in 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th first.
