Synthetic Oil In SI
My car has about 600 miles how long before i change to synthetic oil. they say if you wait to long to change, the car might start acting up,, so i guess its a two part question, A: how long? B: Is it true that it will act up?
one it will not start acting up where did you hear that. I work for Lexus and we add it every 1000 miles as when it comes in for the 1k service. I would add it whenever you do your first oil change.
the moment i got the car i changed the oil to mobile 1 full sytetic oil with an k & n oil filter fellow by a aem cai . snytetic oil best
i bought it off my cuz and paid evertying ( he couldnt afford ) i think i changed oil around 1300 miles ...

Why would you switch the oil right when you get the vehicle. The engine doesn't come from the factory with synthetic, so the engine needs to be broken in before you switch. If you did switch before the engine is broken in the piston rings won't wear in properly and won't seal. Synthetic is a beter oil, but if it is put in before the break in period, you'll have problems down the line.

did my 1st oil change at about 3200(20%) at the dealer with regular oil. i just did my second oil change at about 6300(15%) and switched to Mobil1 5w-30 and she's runnin beautifully.
theres special additives in the oil comes from the factory that help the break-in process. the manual advises you NOT to change your oil quickly the first time and to leave the factory oil in.

exactly...your not supposed to change your oil for the first time until 5000 miles
and it also says in the manual that synthetic has no advantages in honda motors....

how hard are you running it for your oil life to go down quickly? your only supposed to use about 20% for every 1000 miles = 0% every 5,000 miles which is the recommended change time

When I get my Si, or any new car, I will not switch to synthetic until 10-15K miles.
You want your motor to be broken in before you make the switch. I personally do not believe that it's ever too late to switch to synthetic oil, but you can do it too early. I switched my 5.0 Mustang to synthetic at 145K miles and switched back and forth several times and I had no trouble hitting 200K miles in that car. And yes, I drove it hard, often.
Honest question: As far as the manual saying that there are no advantages in a Honda motor, does anyone know why it says that? Seems to me that there is plenty of evidence to support that synthetic oil is greatly superior, so how does Honda build a motor that doesn't see any benefit, either in reduced wear or free power?

if you look in the manual under service it says oil change should be every 5,000 miles...the rest of the calculations are just simple math. 5000 miles = 20% every 1,000 miles

You have to always consider the sales side of all vehicle manufacturers, including Honda. Saying that the oil only needs to be changed every 7500 miles instead of every 3000 miles effectively cuts maintenance costs for oil changes in half, which makes the car cost the buyer less money in the long run.
The engineers at Honda unfortunately don't write the owner's manuals, so the recommendations in there aren't always the best to follow.
Stick with synthetic changes every 3k and you'll be good to go.

Yes there is special additives in the oil that the car came with. Regular oil is a good oil for breaking in a new engine after that I would switch to syntectic. I really like Motul out of all the oils I have used.

I believe that most cars that come factory filled with Mobil 1 have had the motor run in before they fill it with synthetic.
In the same vein, you are aware of the oil consumption issues with the Z06's right?
I'll say it once again, you can switch to synthetic too early. I am going to play it safe and do it on the 2nd or 3rd oil change.
Finally, if you are running synthetic oil, you do not have to change it every 3K miles. An independent study was done which showed that synthetic can be run for a long time, 10K+ miles, and still perform within spec. If you're going to change it every 3K miles, just run normal oil.
My advice on synthetic oils, for anyone not stuck in a rut of misinformation, is as follows:
1. Run a high quality oil filter, like Mobil 1.
2. Change the filter every 3-4K miles.
3. Change the oil every 6-8K miles.
That's just what I plan on doing though......

When you just change oil filter and not oil, it doesn't start to get messy from oil pouring out? I'm guessing you do it when it's cold so all of the oil sits on the bottom.

I don't have an Si yet, so I'm not sure where the filter is on a K-series motor.
But, yes, I change the oil filter on our D-series motors after it has sat for a while. It doesn't make any more of a mess.

my friend had an 06 type-s and switched to synthetic around 3500 miles and beat the crap outta his car every day and never had a problem and never burned oil!!!
