tach on stock guage cluster
hmm someone explain whats wrong with mine.
a few times in the past it has jumped around (as in the rpm has jumped around) but normally when the engine is cold.
however its not the engine that is the problem but the rpm reading.
well today it started up normal and i drove it for a hile til i noticed idle was 0 rpm.
also the reading is off in general. 60 mph is over 5,000 rpm in 5th.
anyways.. the cluster is just way off. So whats wrong with my stock RPM/ tach cluster?
btw i have a b16.
oh and the rpm reading is wrong. engine is 100% fine

The Signal for the tach feeds off the igniter might replace that... The small blue wire comming out of the dist. goes right to the cluster might look for any splices or anything loose/corroded inside where it connects
On you distributor, there should be 1 blue wire. the wire goes into your wire harness, and into the cab and then to the tach. Rip (not literally) it out of the wire harness and follow it with your hands and a flashlight, or good light source, and check for any breaks, its not that hard. Just look for the BLUE WIRE.

i honestly cant see one blue wire on the cluster. blue with other color but not just plain blue.
is it the blue one next to the one that is ground?
and what do u mean cab?

could be a faulty ignitor, not the distributor, I have the same problem, and I'm pretty sure it's my ignitor. Though tomorrow I will check the blue wire, just because I too did not know that was THE wire that sent the signal. Good luck, take off your ignitor and take it to autozone, they will diagnose it for you.
Edit: Based on what I've been reading out here, the ignitors are a common problem our cars have. So it is very likely that the ignitor is the problem. I think

You take off the distributor cap, it's being held on by like 5 screws or so. then once it's uncovered, it's right there, it looks like this more or less.

and I dont know what it does. It ignites ****?

It could also be the signal pickup that's located on the bottom of the distributor. I've had the induction coil come off it's backing when rev limiter kicked in and I lost tacho. I grabbed another sensor from a spare distributor, installed it and solved the problem.
Good luck
