New Here, and have a few Questions.
whats up everybody, im new to this, and i have a few questions. i have a 88 sedan dx, stock motor by the way, the car was running hot, on my way to a meeting, and it started to get real hot before my exit, so i took the exit, pulled into work, went into my meeting, and when i came out, my car wouldnt start. So i checked my water and oil, and when i took off the oil cap, my oil was the same color as coffee. the next morning i came out and tried to start the car, and after like 3 trys the car start, i let it idle for a little bit then turned it off, i took off the head, and the gasket looked like **** valves where ugly. so i change my head with a d16a6 head valves and everything is fine on that, had put a new gasket on, and now the car wont start, it will crank but wont turn over. any Ideas of what it can be? i was thinking that my motor is done, since my motor had 308XXX
! so any help is better than non, thanks.

ok since you are new (and I don't feel like flaming) you need to learn how to use the search. Almost any question you ask, has been asked and is probably somewhere on the site. Most of the stuff you will need to know is usually in archived topics, so remember to search recent and archived topics. as for your car... it will crack but wont turn over???? what do you mean by this? spelling check can also be very helpful, also it is a good Idea to put something in the title of the thread other than new here... a better title would have been "head swap and now car will not start" more people would be inclined to look at the thread.. Welcome to HT
alright thanks, and i ment crank sry was in a hurry when i typed that, but thanks for the info, and i tried to search but nothing came up btw.
You have a blown head gaskit, probably you have driven ur car with out water or radiator leak, which result in oil and water to mixture, look like coffie,
this is the only reason your car is getting hot, try to replave it at the earliest,

Check your timing like they said and it might also be good to take 5 minutes to check your distributor, plugs, wires, and such. Some older cars have module problems too. When hot they will cause the car to not start and when cold it works fine. More than likely its none of these things but Just keep the little things in mind since they only take a second to check.
i have the stock intake manifold on, and i didnt do my timing, i wouldnt know how to do that, i know i will need a timing gun, but once i get it, imma be stuck, i'll search it once i get it, thanks for the info tho.

wait u said u didn't do ur timing? did u put the head on and just put the timing belt on, and turn it over?
u have to have the head and and the block set at TDC to get the start. u need to explain a little better. i hope u didn't screw something up.

i put the head on, and the timing belt didnt set timing. the car wont even start! all i did was swap heads and head gasket, didnt change anything, didnt do timing, i dont even know how to do the timing. the car wont start at all, so if it wont start because of my timing, how will i go about adjusting it so the car will start?
the marks on the crank must be straight up theres a red dot its very small, the other markets are on the cam gear.it says up it need to be up. take off the timing belt and do that by hand. it more detailed than that but i need to find the write up on it. give me a min. but cross ur finger an hope nothing is screwed up.
ok i can't find it right now plus i'm lazy, but u need a shop manual, look in timing u don't need a timing light to get it to start and run it wont run right but run unless u f@cked up the valves. did u torque down the head bolts to the specs? its all in the book. there are 3 groves on the cam gear and on the crank. the red one on the crank needs to be up, like were the alternator belt and the crank seperate. and the cam gear needs to be UP theres word on the cam gear then there are two to marks that point to the front of the car and to the back. u need to line then up with the valve cover. once every thing is set re check to make sure everything is where it needs to be then put the timing belt on and tight to belt and try it u can screw up any thing that u have probly already hurt. so and also make sure the distributor, which moves front and back needs to be more front but close to center.
like if it was a clock about 1 oclock. i hope u understand that there more detail to it but that the just of it and u being on trial mode u can only post 5 times a day, and u've posted 4 so. i sent u a IM u should be able to ask me question there i think. but since ur on trial mode i don't know if u can recieve them, hope this helps.

they are talking about cam timing not ignition timing
they are talking about cam timing not ignition timing
this happened to me,check your compression ratio for the cam gears, and check the t-belt,well first turn it on and study the cam gears,if u had a leak on the head gasket it couldve got on the cams (somehow) and well basically fucked it up hope it helps buddy
thanks all of you, i have tried TDC, not sure if i did it right, but still no help, i and dont know how to adjust the cam timing, i went out and bought a timing gun/light whichever you may call it, and still got nothin, i think i just might rip this motor out, and start with the ls i have in my garage, but im thinking my Ls needs new sleeves, does anyone how much that runs? thanks in advance.
i hate to say this but if don't know how to put a SOHC in time then why are u goin to try to rebuild the motor of an ls. timing is easy u line 3marks two on the cam and one on the crank.
please do some research first.

i cant see any marks on my pulley, i looked i see the 3 on the cam, but i dont see any marks on my pulley, and if i cant fix this little problem, then imma just pay someone to swap in the LS for me, wasnt planning on doin it my self, only major thing i ever did was swap my trannys, but thanks for all the help guys.
the markets on the crank pulley are hard to see. there just little dots. look on the pulley closed to the motor, where the alternator belt sets. swaps are easier than putting a car in time.
