Default bad coil? car starts now but is powerless

UPDATE: Changed the spark plugs, and plug wires tonight and she fires right up with no hesitation or missing. The only problem now is it seems to have a high idle around 1500....on a cold start the idle is like 2k...tapping the gas makes the idle go down to 1000 and then it raised back to 1500 rpsms? what gives? ignition timing is perfect.

97 ek with d16b7, car broke down on me tonight, something popped and it died pretty instatnly. no cel's, would not start after it quit just would turn over and over and smoke was coming from the intake. I replaced the coil with that of a distributor king obd1 coil and the car starts up fine now but idles rough and is powerless, seems to be running on 3 cylinders maybe? throwing code 45... any thoughts on this? i'll know a bit more tomorrow in the daylight....

Check your ignitor. Code 45 is due to to much fuel and that could be caused due to the ignitor being bad.

Well, Code 45 usually resorts ot hte O2 sensor. But before you check any of that, check your spark plugs. And I am pretty sure you shoul have an obd2 Coil. Not sure if that has anything to so with it.

Internal components are the same throughout obd1 and 2 only difference is external and internal coil.
