Default Lincoln Precision Tig 185 vs TA 185

Hi guys,
I'm needing some advice from those who have experience with either or both of these machines.

I will be using this to build exhuast systems, headers (turbo), harley exhuast pipes, etc. I guess you can call this light duty. I can forsee doing aluminum, but not often, therefore I like that these two machines have AC capabilities. I've been looking at the Lincoln welder for some time now, but recently the TA has popped up on my radar. The only thing that's discouraging me is the cost. I'm not going to be doing anything in massive quantities, just personal use.

So anything you guys can offer would be appreciated

I have the Lincoln PT185....and plain and simple I have no complaints. The low amperage capability is awesome compared to a Miller 180 I used, it comes with a basic pulser control, and it's backed by a name like Lincoln. Dealers are local usually so service is simple...I have yet to need any service though.

I know it is Honda-Tech's duty to hype TA products, so that is probably what you'll end up buying. TA is a nice, small inverter TIG with similar capabilities. The small portability can be an advantage, but you still have the gas to haul around which certainly isn't light. I've never used the TA though, so I can't speak for it. I'd be curious about duty cycle and other features that may not be mainstream common talk, but yet be quite nice.

All I know, is when I bought my Lincoln, for the money it was between the PT185 and the Miller 180SD....the PT185 is the easy winner. I can vouch for the PT185's capabilities, it's a good machine.

Your best bet is to see what brand your local welding shop carries more of and choose accordingly. I've used both of those machines and they both weld nicely, so I would pick what ever would be easiest to get service should the need arise.
