Default 1.5 dx distributor woes

how do u guys check if a distributor is good or bad? my car been dying mysteriously with a code 15 but the ignitor and ecu are ok.. just that last time it used to leak oil from the distributor and i wonder if that made it bad.

every single help is appreciated

one way to check to remove it and open it up and see how smooth the rotor spins.. mine spins pretty un-smoothly and I've already had the car die on me at random times where all I hear is a *pop* and the car's suddenly off, i also forgot to mention my car stutters a little around 4krpm when the RPM needle starts to go crazy all over the place

O_O . it's suppose to spin smooth? i can't move it with my hand with the distributor cap off. does that mean i have to replace the whole unit if i cant spin it?

you got to remove it from the camshaft first...
remember rotor is connected to the camshaft and camshaft is connected to the timing belt which is connect to you know what... so its impossible to move it without removing it from the engine...

oh , dang it ........ my bolt on the top of the distributor stripped.

any idea how to get a stripped bolt out from that position of the distributor?

i put the biggest vise grips i can find and clamped hard on it. it ate the bolt but it could not budge it.

any specific brand or type to look for ?

haha my top bolt got stripped too but vice grips gets them out.. just keep trying..
