###another "getting jdm engine b.a.r'd in CA" thread!!
hey guys, i recently spoke to a local guy, he said CA regulations of jdm engines had loosen up quite a bit, meaning you can passed the referee test as long as your engine is clean enough to pass a regular smog test. what that also mean is we dont nescessary have to convert the engine to US spec.
is this true? anyone has passed the state ref with jdm engine lately? please share your experience.
if this is true i will call HMO tomorrow to order a jdm xsi obd1 engine.

from what i have heard, No jdm engine can be ref'd in California. I also have heard rumors of california banning all imported engines all together. Cali goverment officials are getting tired of dealing w/ these many different motors that are coming in. I heard they are going to eliminate in completly.
p.s. the Smog Ref's are not honda experts and alot of stuff can be sneaked by.

On that last comment, it really depends on where you go. Some guys really know what's up and will check all parts, numbers and diagrams.
Other places dont take too much time like they are supposed to.

jdm engine can be b.a.r.'d, but it's gonna be tough if you have a 1st gen b16a, trying to convert into a US spec b16a3.
the rumor i heard was basically if your jdm engine can pass smog, you can get it b.a.r.'d, because afterall, the purpose of emission control is to keep the vehicle clean, not what kind of engine it has. though there's still a limitation on engine swap, like putting b20 into civic is still being regulated.
i dont know why the people at Beauru of Automotive Repair are all over these import engines, while letting the domestic engines on the loose. a while back i saw an FC3S on SF craigslist, with a ford 5.0L V8 swap, and the motherF* is B.A.R'd legal. the owner even shown the sticker for proof.
