hypothetically speaking:
if i were to do an engine swap, about what price range would i be looking at? and does anyone have any suggestions as far as my options go (98 civic ex, auto tran)

Lets see, anywhere from 700 to 6000. depends on what you want to swap.
And If you plan to get a 5spd someday there's absolutely no point in throwing money around for nothing.
