what is a rom burner
First off, a "rom" is a "read only memory" IC chip.
When talking about ECU's, it's the rom that holds the fuel and ignition maps. Or in other words how the ECU tells the engine to work.
If you "chip" an ECU, you normally are adding a different ROM chip. The original chip stays where it is, but is disabled and the ECU is told to read the new chip.
SO; A rom burner is a device that is used to load the data into the new ROM chip. It's called a "burner" due to how older ROM chips actually burnt the data into the chip and they were a one time usage thing. In other words, you couldn't erase them and start over. That's not the case anymore.
(it is more accurate to call them EPROM chips. that's erasable / programable read only memory)
