Aluminum Sprockets - How long do they last?
This one had about 8,000 miles on it, and its toast - the chain started skipping last night. The last time I adjusted the chain (I clean, lube and adjust every few weeks, ride it every day) the sprocket looked fine. The teeth were showing some wear, but nothing like this.
Since I need to order another sprocket anyways, y'all think I should go ahead and have a new tire mounted? The front looks fine, but the rear wont make it through the rest of the year as it is.

Broken teeth or fast sprocket wear are a result of a worn chain. Other than high miles on a chain, common factors in premature chain wear are a lack of cleaning and lubricating and/or not enough slack in the chain.(you know- maintenance). When a chain becomes so stretched that it doesn't fit in between each tooth of the sprocket you will have tooth breakage as the chain comes in contact with the teeth at the wrong place at very high speed. See 'When should I change my chain and/or Sprockets', above.

you said you cleaned/lubed the chain regularly, maybe it was too worn or you were running it too tight?

The chain was new along with the sprockets. I was definately not running it too tight, always erred on the side of loose.

I really dont know
I bought it from coleman, they were able to beat most of the online prices I found - I had wanted steel, but they could only get aluminum, and he said it should last "15,000 miles no problem".
They also ordered the wrong chain for me, and sold me a chain tool without everything I needed to install the rivet master link too. I wont buy parts there anymore. Generally I'm a fan of "support your local bike shop" but I'm not dealing with their **** anymore.

support fast lanes then, or fairfax cycle.
anyhow, they must have sold you some POS company.
granted it may be the same, i konw other ppl who get a lot more mileage out of their sprocket.
steel is the way to go for commuting IMHO

Fastlane, the guys that ordered me the wrong cam chain tensioner, leaving my bike down for an extra week..... and the ones that dicked andrew around on getting a set of tires for 2 weeks?
Dont get me started on Fairfax cycles, after screwing over Brian and making me wait outside their shop for over 2 hours to get my tires mounted that were supposed to be ready that morning.
NoVa bike shops = t3h sux.

I'm not sure if there is a steel sprocket available for an F3 with a 520 chain
Either way, bike will probably be sold over the winter so I am not going to lose sleep over it and just replace it with another alum one.
