Default Alternator? Sensor? HELP!

I was just driving my car at normal speeds, 97 civic hatchback cx, when the check engine light came on and my lights started flickering like the car was beginning to lose battery power. The car dies sometimes because it does not have enough juice to turn the motor over.

We thought it was the O2 sensor, so I got a new one, the car is at 118,000 miles. Check engine light is STILL on, lights STILL flicker. When I do not use the battery, such as turning my cd player off, fans off, lights off, the check engine light is a solid brightness.

The speedometer sits at 0 no matter how fast i'm going, until it decides to wig out and shoot up to 120 and back down and any speed in between.

We have one of those computers that plugs into your car and reads your car's problems, and the computer says the speedometer sensor is shot. Would that explain the battery losing power though? I need help!

Also, on the same day that the symptoms occured, I made a blonde move and left my gas cap on the top of my car, I drove the car around without a gas cap for a while but later that night, the check engine light came on and that was the beginning of my problems. I got a new gas cap the next day. Howeverrrrrr its been over 3 weeks and problem is still not fixed. I'm lucky that no cops have seen my epilepsy car

yeah it might be your alternator is almost dead, or your plugs are coming out of the alternator meaning it is not recharging the battery. about your speedo wiggin out well you speed sensor either no good or your wires are crimped
