i believe the wagon awd came with a six speed but the 6th speed isnt a higher gear but a very LOW gear.

Odd. Maybe it could be swapped out... A 6-speed D tranny with close ratio gears and a really high final drive would be sweet!

Yeah, the part of the drivetrain that transfers power to the rear usually breaks.

yes, they did have a "Super Low" first. when selected, it was not only an insanely low stump-pullin' gear, it "locked" the car into "4wd." just like engaging the lever under the hood.

yes but all of that can be swapped out! i am a mechanical engineering grad student at WSU and i am going to work on converting that transmission to a race tranny as one of my projects. I have been interested in finding out if they really exist? Now that i know they do the sky is the limit for me!!!!!!!!!!

my guess it would be cheaper to swap in a kseries with a 6 speed than i would be to convert a wagon tranny to work in 2wd as a 6 spd.

Ya I agree with this statement. It can be done, but how much do you want to spend to make it work.

i belive the 4wd wagon has 5 spds, plus a low range for 1st. so 6 spds. is this correct? the 2wd fwd drive is just a d series tranny

well goddam! it does have some extra "low" gearing.

but its also meant for 4wd. so who knows if its at all compatible.

wow, check out that diff! 2 diff gears (FD).

no surprise, it looks like the CR-V diff.

i think the actual tranny would work in a fwd, but the extra gear would probably not. even so, it would not serve any purpose

i think the actual tranny would work in a fwd, but the extra gear would probably not. even so, it would not serve any purpose. it really only has 5 forward gears. if you wanted a faster d series tranny, get a zc one, with an si final and an hf 5th. i believe that is the right combo

It will bolt up to the engine. I don't know if the mounts will work though. My brother has an 88 AWD wagon. the axles are different too. You have to have an engine with the 3 bolt flange on the back for the mid shaft. Also, the wagon trans has cable shift linkage like the accords and preludes. the weakest part of the drivetrain is the driveshaft. the diff bearings and transfer case fail becaz they don't get the oil changed with Honda MTF as often as they should.
