Default Buying a helmet. Are my braces a problem?

Hello, I've been reading the forums for a while and decided to sign up now. Besides being new to the forums, I've just decided to try out a bike.

I've been researching and reading up and I'm pretty set on everything but yesterday I went to try out a helmet and I seem to have run into a problem. The helmet that seems to fit my head the most snug puts some pressure on my cheeks. On any other person, I really don't think it is that much pressure that it is harmful, but me on the otherhand, I have braces and it hurts my cheeks to have the helmet on. Has anyone else ever come across this problem or know of anybody who has? I was thinking maybe a size bigger but that would make it more loose on my head. Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

Some helmets have removeable cheekpads. Just try a bigger helmet. Different helmet manufacturers make helmets different, so try different styles. Where do you ride in Vegas??

I don't ride anywhere yet
Have to get helmet and all that first because it's required for the class at CCSN to get class M put on my license.

So I can get a helmet that I can remove the cheekpads? Will that compromise safety at all? I know I'm just starting out and maybe I'm being a little paranoid, but I figured I'd be absolutely sure about everything. Better safe than sorry.

Hmm. Maybe by chance I tried out helmets that just weren't a good fit for me then. I guess I'll go back and try the other ones that I didn't touch cause of price and see if I can get them online if they fit well. Thanks for the input.

By the way, fluke, if you happen to read this again, I was wondering if I could get in touch with you about some questions (AIM or MSN or whatever? I can't PM you on the forums cause I'm trial I'm guessing). Like I said, I'm new to all this and I actually don't know anybody in Vegas personally that doesn't drive a car so I don't even know where to start. Appreciate it much if so.

I would wear a mouth protector; wouldn't want them going thru your skin in the event of a crash.

I have braces. My helmet: Shoei TZ-1. I don't notice any discomfort.

I thought about that. I guess I'll see what my Ortho thinks and maybe see about a mouth guard.

jaxn: I tried a Shoei but I'll double check. Maybe your head fits better than mine does in them.

I think he meant replace the cheekpads with different sized ones, not to simply remove them. The fitment will be looser, and the helmet *could* possibly roll/twist around your head if you fall.

Some helmets make it easier for you to slip glasses in. For the most part, you'll have to take your glasses off before putting the helmet on. I tried riding with my glasses once, but it put them at an odd angle (further out from my face) and it also put extra pressure on my temples.
