why is my oil dark black???? ??? ??? ? ???
i have a rex with b16a and i would do an oil change and like a couple hundred miles later it would be really black i just want to know what it would be. how do you know if you are running to rich and is it good or bad? would really help for some knowledge from you guys
does the oil smell like fuel?? if so, your leaking fuel into the oil system somewhere.. oil does just get dark *** black like that unless your driving a diesel. (i'm a mechanic in the army) also, is it thin and like there is paint thinner in it (another sign of fuel in it). what brand and weight are you using?
oil get black when then engine part are dirty. most signs of dirty oil is unchanged or leaks or broken gaskets. u can have oil in a car for 9 months and it can still be gold. is the engine bay and engine dirtier than the rest. i would suggest looking for small leaks and check the coolant. is ur car smoking burning oil will do it to.
yeap it is pretty thin and does kinda smell like gas
it doesnt burn oil but when i first start my car from like going to a movie or something high rpm's in fisrt gear it will smoke i know it is not oil it is a real light grayish

check piston rings.. they could be shot allowing fuel to go past when car is running.. also (although unlikely) injectors overspraying??? or dripping?? does the car smell like it runs rich or uses way too much gas??

well, you need to fix the running rich part. then u need to check for bad rings. how many miles are on the engine, and have you done a full tune up? i.e o2 sensor, plugs, wires, oil/filer (yes in know its been changed a shitload), cap and rotor, timing right??
my car smells like gas when im in the high rpms. accellerating fast. and i used to get almost 700km's a tank and now i only get 500. my oil smells like gas and gets black fast too... what are some ways of fixing the gas thing? i cant tell if the injectors are leaking.
fisrt off How do i fix the running rich part?
and the bad rings? no i dont know how many miles is on the motor. ant i need to do a full tune up any idea how much that will cost me for a shop to do it(i have no time)? and what is all in a full tune up and price's on everything

for a full tune up, you can be looking at a couple hundred.(labor is most of that 60-80/hour is what mechanics charge). as for the re-ringing if it needs it, a few hundred as well. (labor cost again) if cost is of no factor, find a reputable shop and drop it off. if cost is an issue, have someone who has done this before give you a hand. as for fixing it running rich, that is the timing. it weill be addressed in the tune up.
janz3n, check your tming.. sounds like your timings advanced too much.

^^^ thanks alot will do.. just cuz im lazy can you tell me which way is retarded and which way is advanced for the distributor? and would being advanced too much really put gas in my oil?
only a few hundred for re ringing ? is that including labour? thought it would be over a thousand for that because they have to take the bottom end apart and stuff.
i cant tell you.. but yes, too advanced will cause that at high rpm. go here to get the manual and follow book http://www.hondahookup.com/manuals/
towards firewall is advanced and to the front of the car is retarded... i looked it up. hope doing this works. i didnt put this engine in so its probably advanced alot. i think i heard knocking sometimes too. its a d15b2 with mpfi swap.
the knocking could be a lifter or a valve.. i would check that out. if its a pinging sound, that could be detonation.. and that a result of too rich...it should help a lot to fix the timing. did you do the swap, or was it already done before you bought the car. if you are not firmiliar with the swap, check out the faq and so the required research if you want to tackle this if the timing doesnt fix it. otherwise, have a shop competent in swaps look it over.
dr@ke, no problem man. feel free to hit me up anytime you have a quesion. gsxr1k05 on yahoo im.

iv changed the timing myself before.. i didnt do this swap, but it is the second swap since iv owned the car. the knocking is very slight. i plan on swaping in a zc in the future so i just want this engine to last till spring.
well, i had a 92 cutlass, and it had a knockign as well. turned into a tin can bouncing in the engine sound.. loud as hell. then the engine seized up.. hehe think it lasted for 2 weeks.. from time the sound was noticed to when engine siezed.. might want to insopect it
i dont even know what engine knock really sounds like..im just guessing. its a honda it will last. i drove with a nasty head gasket leak for a week.. would cover the entire road at start up and then go away.. untill it just smoked continuosly... that was fun.i hate this d15b2 but they can hold up to alot of abuse. i can only hear the knocking when the engine is cold.
iv been thinking about this timing thing.. why would i smell gas if the timing was advanced too much? wouldnt it be too retarded? cuz if its advanced its going to burn quicker isnt it? im probably wrong.. sometimes when i think too much i over think and get confused.

thats piston slap...its normal for older motors

when the piston slaps around in the cylinder because it is not hot yet.
when it warms up it expands and fits snug...
