205/40/17 5th gen Lude
205/40 will work, but this will cause your wheels' overall diameter to shrink a little. this will result in smaller sidewalls (which is bad if the tire's don't have a stiff enough sidewall), your gear ratios will slightly change and your revs will be higher, your car will lower slightly, your tires will wear through faster, your speedometer will be off a little, etc...
but smaller tires will also improve acceleration, and like i said before your revs will be higher, and your revs will not drop as much between shifts.
i would still recommend the correct tire size though for a daily driver prelude. i use 215/40-17 on my 17" x 7" rims.

205/40/17 is smaller than the stock wheel diameter. 205/45/17 or 215/40/17 are better. 215/40/17 is only slightly smaller than stock diameter and gives you a little more treadwidth.
check the load ratings on the 205/40/17s too - I bet that 99% of the tires out there in that size don't meet the factory load rating
if you're going to stray more than a few percent from the factory size, you'd be safer to go bigger (215/45/17 for example).
