I have a 1996 Honda Civic Sedan EX (CND) 106hp motor that I bought for cheap and am fixing up. The max towing capacity for this car is 395KG or 871lbs I am going to be moving to Alberta for a few months to work and am wanting to buy a trailer that weighs between 1,000-1,200lbs 10 or 13 foot model (older one) and I am wanting to hook it up to my sedan, the drive is 1,500km so its pretty far. I was wondering if I swaped the tranny for a EX(USDM) tranny would this be a little easier on the motor/tranny? (Already have the motor out of the car and also a spare ex tranny) What other methods could I use to tow this trailer? If I can't do this my only other option would be buying a bigger car, then of course I would want a bigger trailer....and thats money I don't really have. What is the towing specs on a 1996-2000 Civic Sedan with the 127hp motor? And by the way this car has 280,000km on it with a new DX motor 58,000km on it so I don't really care about the car 2 much its just for getting around. Any input would be awsome!

 

other than safety concerns, I strongly advise against doing it, civics were never meant to tow things, especially something as heavy as an unloaded 1000lb trailer and as far as 1500km. I can see after you load it up your car will either be scraping the floor, be unable to go up a hill or be unable to stop when going down a hill. I'm not sure where you live but if I was in your position I would just rent a U-Haul or some other moving truck and carry everything in the truck and get a tow dolly and tow the civic. The gearing wont help especially if its something as trivial as USDM vs a Canadian model transmission...what you need here is torque to move all the weight and even though you dont care about the car, after going that many miles with that weight I dont see the car lasting much longer.

Sorry, I wasn't really clear when I said trailer. I ment a travel trailer, as in a camper. And it wouldn't be loaded up with stuff really it would just be the basics.

I would not do it. I could understand towing a trailer that weighed maybe 800 pounds loaded, but a travel trailer.

Someone find that video of the red car pulling a travel trailer up a hill that dies and rolls backwards
