Default Tranny/Clutch alignment

I'm replacing the clutch in my 88 DX hatchback and i can't get the damn transmission to slide into the splines on the clutch disc. I can take everything back apart and the disc will slide over the input shaft of the tranny. Last night i took the whole thing apart three times and lined everything back up and still no luck. Anyone have any tips, secrets, or advice on something i could do different? I tell you, trying to get the drivers side axle shaft, input shaft, and bolt holes lined up while having oil, grease and other fluids drip on you sure shortens your fuse.

put some grease on the splines. that usually helps. and i usually use a lift. makes life easier.. along with a buddy to help. as for the fluids dripping, maybe you should clean your work area up before you go at it again. makes life easier, the car look better, and its easier to keep clean.

rotate the engine a bit so the splines will line up better.

First, you DID use a clutch alignment tool to center the clutch disk. Right?

Go to your local hardware store and get some 6" long bolts with the same thread as the transmission mounting bolts.

Cut the heads off of the 6" bolts and cut a notch that will fit a screwdriver tip.

Screw the (now) 6" studs into the top two transmission mounting bolt holes and use those to align/support the transmission.

Now you can hang the tranny there, push, cuss and rotate the engine until it slides home.

Once it's seated, put in one or two of the other bolts to hold it in place, use the screwdriver slots to back out the studs and put the proper bolts in.

You do have an 88 clutch, right? That year's unique versus the others. Might be a REALLY dumb question, but that's what I'm here for..
