Picked up my "first new bike" today :)
Well yep i finally did It i bought a new bike. I have had 2 bikes in the last 3 years and I thought it would be time to get another one. The last two bikes I had I never crashed and they were both ninja 600rr. Today i went down to champion motorcycles and picked up a 06 yamaha r6 raven black. I am super stoked and am loving it so far except the throttle is way different. I dono if its just a different bike or what but seems like its hard to get going from a stop. anyways Ill post pictures tomorrow but I had a few questions.
1. How long should I wait for tires before I start going lower? If i remember its 100miles?
2. Whats the break in period they say dont go above 4 but that is impossible so far I have not gone past 7.5 and have not opened the throttle all the way. and how long 500 miles or what.
3. i have kawi gear it sucks real bad can i pull it off for a little.. or is that a no no haha.

I've been hanging around rmn, '06 guys say you really don't get any 'oomph' until 8 grand. Break-in period might be ~15 mph for you.
I think the guys at the dealership told me ~40 miles for tires.
Go for it and rock out the saki shizzle.

I'd say about 60 miles for tires. And just carefully start leaning over. If you don't use the tire it's not really broken in.
That feeling of having a hard time getting going is probably due to the tall first gear, and lack of overall power on that bike. It's about 20hp down from the previous R6 in mid range power, and it's first gear ends in the 90mph range.

1. you dont have to wait, just make sure they are up to temp. you dont think we wait at the track do ya?
2. break in is a myth
shoulda put that sucker on a dyno/taken it ot the track and broke it in correctly
3. kawi gear is better than no gear!

Sand paper doesnt do anything. Heat is what breaks in tires. Once you get some heat into the tires just start gradually leaning it over more and more. It doesnt take that long once your tires are up to the right tempeture. You will feel it once your tires are broken in.
As for the crazy break-in period that is specified by the manufacturer, its really a safety precaution so they arent liable for idiots that go WOT on brand new cold tires. You can do an easy break-in or a hard break-in, its up to you. Change your oil early since there is so much crap from a brand new motor.

why waste the time? it only takes a couple of miles down a good road to break in a tire, no need to sand them.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Kirk@SyndromeAuto »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I have had 2 bikes in the last 3 years and I thought it would be time to get another one. He has a `99 R6, he was saying he appreciates HIS R6 more than the FI ones.

I was thinking that, too, but I think he means ZX-6R(R).
