I want to try a different ecu in my ex to see if that might be why im having these issues, i was gonna snag one off ebay cheap but im not sure which one to get, i have a 98 5spd ex but i see the 96-98 ex 5spd ecu's on ebay with part numbers 37820-P2P-A31, 37820-P2P-A32, and 37820-P2P-A33 does it matter which one i get? im not sure and i dont want to get the wrong one

 

anyone?

ECU Part Numbers

All Honda ECUs have a part number which is located on the side of the ECU and inside the ECU on the connector. e.g. 37820-P72-A01

The part number consists of three components:

Honda's part number for ECU, which is always 37820
Three characters (which are loosely related to the model of car/engine). e.g P72
Three characters (which are the revision of the ECU) e.g. A01
The middle three characters are the most useful to identify what the ECU is. Different generation ECUs may use the same characters. e.g. a P72 OBD I ECU is different from a P72 OBD II ECU. Here is a list of common ECUs:

in 88-91 ecus (PM6, PR4, PW0, PR3, PM7):
5spd = 000, 001, 002, A00, A01, A10, J00, J001, C01, C00
Auto = J51, J50, A50, A51, 901, A60, C50, C51, X30, A80, L50, L51

92-5 ECUs (P28, P30, P61, P72, P91, P08)
5spd = 000, 001, 002, 003, A00, A01, A02, C00, C01, C02, J00, J01, J02, G00, G01
Auto = J50, J51, 901, 902, C50, C51, C52, A50, A51, A52, L50, L51, G51

96-00 ECUs (P2E, P2P, P2J, P72)
5spd = 000, 001, 002, 003, A00, A01, A03, C00, C01, C02, C03, J00, J01, J02, A11, C11
Auto = A70, A71, A72, A91, A92, C70, C71, C72, C91, C92

from the patterns we can learn the following:
first letter = country of orgin
J = Japan
C= Canada
A=USA
G=Europe
second digit, if 5, 7, 9 then ecu is auto usually
third digit denotes the version/variation

the A31, A32, A33 shouldn't matter. they are just different revisions of the same basic ecu. any of them should work.

 

only thing you gotta worry about is the make sure its OBD2A and not OBD2B

 

Thanks for all the help guys, i didnt think it would matter, but when i looked up the part numbers on the honda site it listed all p2p 5spd ecus as a33, and i wasnt sure where to go from there

 

honda made 33 different versions of the P2P ECU.
the following are the ones to be concerned about.

A01 - 96 sedan manual
A03 - 97 sedan manual
A12 - 99-00 coupe/sedan manual
A31 - 96 coupe manual (replaced with A33)
A33 - 96-97 coupe/sedan manual
A34 - 98 coupe/sedan manual
A71 - 96 sedan auto
A73 - 97 sedan auto
A83 - 96-97 coupe/sedan auto
A84 - 98 coupe/sedan auto
A92 - 99-00 coupe/sedan auto

what are the differences?
are the differences enough to be worried about?
no idea.
(other than OBD2a/OBD2b, and auto/manual that is)

you will notice that some have multiple versions in the same year, honda loves doing that. no idea which came first...
