Default Throwing Code 21 - VTEC spool solenoid valve - how to test?

Hey everyone,

first off i did search and no matches. And i also spent like an hour manually searching thru threads, still no luck so thought i would post.

Like the topic title says, I'm getting CEL code 21. Searched for the code list, pretty easy, and found out its the VTEC spool solenoid valve.

Q#1) What can cause this to be faulty?

Q#2) What can i do to check?

BTW i did find a thread regarding code 21 but no real info there.

Please no "i <U>think</U> its this..." or "...it <U>might</U> be that...", someone who knows would be great, i dont have time to check "this" or "that"! Even a link to some info would be greatly appreciated.

just run a wire straight to the pos side of battery and listen to see if it clicks. if it clicks then you are good. check to see if you have proper connection to the solenoid also.

or you could do what the manual says which is:

1.disconnect 1P connector to Solenoid.
2.check for resistance between solenoid and ground. Should be between 14-30 Ohms; otherwise replace.
3.Make sure more than 7 psi of oil pressure is present at the Solenoid (check by tee-ing into the pressure switch port)
4.do the same thing but this time bring the 1P connector to battery positive, and rev engine to 3K (should be above 57 psi )

other than that double check the solenoid, wiring, or pcm. Hope this helped.

It was weird, usually when i start driving, it takes a few minutes for the light to come on. Most times, as soon as i hit vtec the light will come on following the return to lower RPM's.

On my way to the shop i did a few hard accelerations, light comes on. Had to pick up girlfriend so i stop for gas, and check the oil, pay and leave. Now i drove for like 45 mins. on and off the highway, vtec all kinds, no light. Needless to say no time for shop tonight, will go tomm.

Thought this would shed some light on the problem. I hate intermittant problems.

BTW thanks JDMfantasy, that was along the lines of what i was after. Maybe i should get one of those "manuals". lol Havent had to till now really...are they available on the web?

OK all fixed. I did take the whole solenoid of and cleaned it, checked the resistance and ran a wire to positive of battery, and cleaned up some of the wiring, sloppy install, throughout the engine bay. Everything checked out ok. the only thing i found was the single wire was a lil loose at its connection.

Thanks for the help peeps.

BTW i bought a manual earlier in the week, my internet was out for a few days. Oh well...
