question about decking

Default question about decking

i have a b20b and i am puttin a gsr head on it do i have to deck just the surface or the whole thing any suggestions would be great

You can only deck the surface. Do you want to deck the pistons and oil pan or something?

What is "decking?" Does it have another name?

You should have both the head and block decked. For the H-T member who asked what decking is..it's pretty much shaving the part so it's flush through out. This will make sure your head or block is not warped and will mount up flush. This is the way it was explained to me. Anyone else???

Nope, you've got it. Shaving is what I call it, but you usually gain a little compression when shaving the block and head. Just can't be shaved too much, that's all. A good machine shop will set you up really nice.

Word, Aight, I know what shaving is, thx.

Yeah, u only need to do those, u don't need to shave anything else (just head 'n block)...

i just want to put my head on nothin else like changin pistons or anything so all i need to do is shave it

the real term is called milling....ya have to mill the head and block for them to mate correctly....and yes you will see an up in compression depending on how much you mill
