Ugly Jeep V8 in ratty condition but tows well
Okay, let's be honest here from the start... If you are looking for a sport-ute that will convince your friends and co-workers that you've "made it", this is not your car. Likewise, this Jeep will not get you laid. In fact, it might do quite the opposite, as you hear girls muttering, "I'm not sleeping with the guy who drives THAT thing!" However, if you need to tow a racecar to a track, it will do the job.
Full disclosure:
Condition: The paint sucks. It was already falling off the car when I bought it two years ago, and surprisingly enough... time and exposure to the elements hasn't improved the situation. I've only washed it twice since I bought it, mostly because more paint chips off every time I do. I haven't even considered trying to wax it, as there would be nothing left but primer. So it's dirty white paint, or clean primer, a choice I'll leave up to the new owner. The interior isn't bad. Up front it's actually quite nice, but definately gots worse as you move rearward in the car. When you open the rear (assuming it stays open on its own, which it rarely does) the interior lining hangs down like something you would expect to see on Sanford and Son. The back looks like.... well it looks like it was mainly used to transport tires, tools, jack stands, and everything else I throw in there for every race weekend.
Mechanically: It's as good as one can expect from a Jeep. This is no Honda. In fact, you will note that the words "Jeep" and "Honda" do not share a single common letter between them. This is not a coincidence, I assure you. To be fair, in two years of towing the racecar around, it has only failed me twice. Both times it was the serpantine belt. Needless to say, I now carry a spare belt with me at all times, and a breaker bar to mount it. In the last two years it has gotten a new radiator, the brakes have been completely rebuilt, a new alternator, and few other odds and ends like a battery and starter. Every year I have the full 4WD service done on it, which includes changing all the diff oil, tranny oil, etc. Right now the a/c compressor is broken, but I didn't fix it because I don't use a/c while I'm towing, and I don't need a/c over the winter, which is pretty much the only other time that I use it.
Odds and Ends: It beeps a warning message about the 4WD on a regular basis, but the Jeep dealer insists that it is just a bad sensor, and that the car is mechanically sound. It's just annoying for a while until you learn to tune it out. Of course it would make the same beep if there really was something wrong with the car, and if that happens, you won't be paying attention to it. Oops. It does have a 1 year old CD player in it though, and with the volume loud enough, you can really block out the annoying beeps.
Towing: The car has the pretty standard U-Haul hitch on the back. It hasn't fallen off yet, so that's a good thing. It has the normal round 8 prong electrical connection, and a trailer brake adjuster under the dash. It is rated to tow something like 5500 lbs.
Moby (the great white whale for those who skipped their summer reading assignments in high school) is really pretty much a piece of **** in my humble opinion. I mean, if it wasn't, why would I be selling it? HOWEVER, for all of its faults, the big (5.2L) damn V8 will pull a Honda Challenge car on a steel trailer almost effortlessly. The ideal customer for this car would be somebody who is just making the switch from DEs to racing, and now needs to start towing to the track. Somebody who is mechanically savvy would be a good thing, because, well... it's a piece of **** Jeep. This person would preferably have low self-esteem, and would also not be particularly smart.
The odometer reads 140k, but the dash was replaced once in its lifetime, a process which magically wiped away 20k miles. Then again, if perception is reality, it's easy to perceive that it has 140k on it... so lets just go with that number instead.
I bought it for $4k, so I'll ask for $3k and see if somebody buys it. If I can't get that, the price will go down like an ugly girl on prom night...

I've seen this thing. We pulled into a gas station and a bunch of hot girls instantly jumped in the back. Of course Matt had to ask them to leave because he needed the room to hold the 100 gallons of Gatorade he's just bought. The car is hot, he's just being modest.
with a description like that, how could someone resist?
I'm tempted to come check it out in all it's glorious shittyness
good luck finding a buyer, as i already have a tow vehicle that shares nothing in common with this one

That was a mistake on my part. It's a 5.2L... says it right on the back.
It really is pretty good for what I use it for. It tows the Civic on a steel trailer without breathing hard, and it drives through ANY weather. There are a lot of stupid little things wrong with it, but for the person who just needs a really cheap way to get a car to the track, it's worth it. I've also used it as a daily driver when the Prelude was in the shop with no problems....
I'll be posting pictures tomorrow.

Quit using "my" avatar. Hey, send me the title. Or, was that in the box with the log book?
And, nice ad Matt. +1 for scary good customer service.
Edit: Matt, I'd love to see how well that thing tows. Meet me at Mid-O in a week and a half with a trailer and car. Oh, hey, there's a race that weekend too!
-Chris, needs a brighter avatar anyway...

LMAO. Great FS thread. I have a 1996 JGC 5.2L V8 that I've been trying to get rid of for years.....It does tow well. I used to use to tow the 21' offshore fishing boat I owned. Sold the boat but now I've discovered the Jeep isn't worth crap. So I'm just going to keep for Home Depot runs, etc. When it finally craps out I'll just sell it to a junkyard.....

Hey man, don't talk down the car I'm trying to sell! That's just rude!

the 318 V8 is a very good motor; and the 4wd system used by the Jeep is one of the best; very good in bad conditions!
for the $$$, this is a good buy for someone who wants a beater 4wd to get around in bad weather and to tow a flat trailer/racecar in the summer....
