everytime i start to car the rpm's idle at 1 1/2 whats up with that? any thoughts

 

need more info...is your car actually idling at 1 1/2, or is your guage just saying its at 1 1/2? Is the check engine light on?

 

if you start it for the first time that day it will idle high for a minute or so until it reaches normal operating temps.

 

Nothing to do with the temp trust me. I would not have touch the car all weekend and monday morning start it up and on the left of where the speed is shown the rpms stays on 1 1/2 till i step on the gas but when i get to the light again its at 1 1/2 always?

My cars 0 is 1 1/2 Get it!

 

Sure the engine isn't just stuck at high idle? It's usually around 1500.

What if you shift ridiculously early, so RPMs will be <1500 when you're in the higher gear? Do 30mph in 4th gear, or whatever it takes to force your engine to run at lower RPMs.

 

when i do that it will stall out when gets lower than 1 1/2

 

How's your redline? Has the fuel cutoff shifted up by 500rpms or so? If not, then your gauge is probably accurate and you're just running at high idle for some reason.

Is your check engine light on?

Has it always done this since you've owned it? Did you buy the car recently from a less-than-reputable used car dealer?

If it just started happening, was there any work done to the car before it started?

 

redline is fine. i think the car was turbo by the previous owner.could that have anything to do with it. Fuel cut off? At 6 rpms the vtec kickins in. i dont know what the problem is

 

have you tried to change your idle near your throttle body?

 

By fuel cutoff I meant "bouncing off the rev limiter" - the ECU cuts fuel delivery in a B16Ax at roughly 8150~8250rpms to arrest engine RPMs. Though if you have an aftermarket ECU it can futz with where the fuel cutoff happens. Assuming the ECU is stock, if it lets you get all the way up to 8650~8750 your tachometer would somehow be off by 500rpms. I've never heard of that happening before, but - on a B16Ax VTEC should kick in at WOT (pedal on the floor) at right around 5500rpms, so it almost sounds like that's the case.

Still it could be a lot of things. Have you checked that the timing is set correctly? I know the lower my car idles the more trouble it has with advanced timing. Though if they futzed with the ECU all bets are off.

This is one reason I don't like buying used cars... never know what half-baked solutions you're going to inherit...
