JDM H22a or H22a4
Well I am gonna be buying a swap for my 92 SI.
I found a real good deal on a longblock H22a4 locally with only 60k on it and the yard can even get me the injectors ecu harness and distributor from an H22a1.
What I want to know is should I buy this setup
or should I jump on ebay and buy a JDM H22a Auto swap for just slightly more money.
No I am not gonna use the auto tranny, I already have an H23 tranny I am gonna use for now.
I know the a4 has 55mm mains and is an open deck but however I am not sure which would be a better choice.
I am planning to mildly build the motor over the next couple years. Keeping it NA and maybe getting a port and polish, upgraded valvetrain, cams, header and exhaust. And of course an H22 tranny with LSD or H22 tranny and get an aftermarket LSD.
If I use the H22a4 what else would I need to use the H22a4 in my ODB1 92 Lude SI. I know I dont need the harness, but I can get it anyway so why not.
1 Dizzy
2 ECU
3 Injectors
4?
5?
I did search and found this but wanted to make certain I wasn't missing anything. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=955567

I honestly would NOT buy a motor off of ebay....just seems like such a risk. hmotorsonline or here or a local classified...
I just got my h22a with everything needed to go from 93 h23 auto plus labor (help) for $1500...came with decent header too, delivered to my house. The dude was a stranger then, 30 horrific hours later we are friends, but still. Deals are to be had, just FIND them! Mine was on a local hondas site...
gl man and happy hunting

So I would probably be better off going with the H22a4?
What if I said this
Local H22a4 as descibed above or hmotorsonline JDM H22a?
Then what sort of advise would I get?

Do you mind if I ask why? I have been reading a lot on here about the 2 and the H22a4 seems to have some very nice features, like th 55mm mains for one (better bearing life) and the open deck design. (Less hot spots correct?)
What makes the JDM H22a so much better?
Sorry I am just trying to be thorough.

Yea but this A4 has only 60k, and I am getting it for cheap.

if it was me i would get the a4 locally.
and you will only need the injectors and ecu for the h22a1, as your current h23a1 distributor IS an h22a1 distributor also.
i personally would not bother with the harness as well, since your h23a1 harnessa will plug right in and then you can add the wires for vtec pretty easily.
and as far as a shipped in engine, chances of having broken sensors/parts and then waiting for then to be sent in replacement, or even paying for them from the junkyard....and the fact that the importers are NOT able to really tell you how many miles are on the engine in most cases....well thats enough for me....though i have had 3 engines shipped in/imported. I would always go with a local seller myself.

H22a has more compression and more hp/trq
(not much, but more)
i got mine for 1100 with everything but the ECU, tranny and harness.... i justed used the H23 harness and got vtec set up in about a 1/2 hr...

If Your Just Looking To Have A Stock H22 Then Get The A4, But If You Wanna Mess Arround With Aftermarket Parts And Get More Power Then Take The Jdm. Also Closed Deck Handles More Pressure If You Ever Wanted To Put In A Turbo. I Was Asking The Same Thing You Are B4 I Bought My Motor. And To Be Honest Im Glad I Went With The Jdm. Youll Be Supprised How Much More Is Available To That Motor Than The H22a4. Good Luck In Whatever You Choose.
He is keeping it NA, i would get the h22a4 its a newer engine and if you get a peek at the guage cluster you might see the actual miles.
Youll Be Supprised How Much More Is Available To That Motor Than The H22a4~ wtf are you talking about? are you kidding, there is alot available for both motors due to the fact that they are almost the same... main differences are injectors, the mains are 55mm, compression is .6 higher with the JDM but thats about it there are a few other differences but nothing ground breaking..

I actually did see the cluster, I saw the entire car. It just came into the yard a few days ago. Its a 2001 Base Prelude - Silver with an auto tranny. It has 59k miles.
I posted another thread cause the guy said I caould have the stearing wheel too if I wanted it, but I guess it won't fit in my 4th gen. I might be able to sell some other parts off it too, I am trying to work something out with him.
What is different about the engines to give them different compressions? Is it the pistons?
What other differences are there exactly? Thanks for your help everyone.

Personally, i'd get the local H22a4.....just because its local... Never buy a motor off ebay. My little bro ordered a b16 motor and it came in pieces. Dizzy, Injectors, starter was missing and packing peanuts all over and inside the motor...I've bought motors from Japanesestarmotor.com and hmotorsonline.com and never had a problem.

when I owned my 92 lude, I ordered a f22b off ebay and it came to my house just fine. Everything was there except the tranny cause I didn't pay for that part. I believe its all where you look and who you buy from on ebay. You can get some good deals off there and not get jewed.

Crank pulley is the same and you will have NO issues with your cranksensor. OBD1 ck sensors are in the dizzy. A1 and A4 motors are identical with only minor diffrences. Buy the H22A4 because you know for sure how many miles it has. These crackheads that think they are getting "low milage" JDM engines are not the brightest bulbs in the house.

I was already leaning towards the A4 for 2 reasons,
1. I know how many miles and it was an auto = prolly not beat to death
2. 55mm Mains and Open Deck Design = reliability
My only reason to go toward the JDM at all really is the slightly higher HP numbers.
What is the reason for that? Thinner head gasket? Different rods, pistons? Better flowing head? Larger throttle body?

Different pistons: 10.6:1 instead of the 10:1 that we get.
