Timing Problem

A while back when I first drove this engine it was in another car...The TRANNY went out on it and the car was junked..Then I decided to put the engine in my hatch(this was about 2 1/2 yrs ago)..I wasn"t really up to the challenge of swaping the engine cuz I had never done this before....so we took it to a shop and I told them NOT TO TEAR IT APART cux it run just perfectly and didn't smoke..anyway they did and thats were the problem started...they had to jump it a few teeth of it to say on.. they did not want to finish the job cuz they didn't want to change the wiring harness but they said to take it back for a valve job. When I got the car started it souned great but not the same..so like a DUMBASS I took it back and the car stayed there for a week and when I got it started it sound really bad and at the light it turned off...well I went right back and told them what the hell??? It stayed another week and they didn't touch it so I went and got it and drove like thatfor a few months and fixing other litte things that I thought would correct this problem until one day I decided to give it a valve job. THE IN.=0.007 to 0.009 and the EX.=0.009 to 0.011. when I started and losened the first one where everything was suppost to be it was way too tight... finally that fixed it BUT NOW I put an adj. cam gear and I that to set it and least at 4 degrees advanced for the car to sound right cuz at 0 it will sound like its off time and the engine is at TDC and all the marks line up!
IS THE HEAD MISSED UP BECAUSE I DROVE IT AROUND FOR A FEW MONTHS WITH THE VALVES TOO TIGHT AND WITH NO VALVE LASH???
