Default hit a curb, sliced my tire

i know, im an idiot, but i hit the curb... bent the rim a lil bit, but what im realy concerned about is my tire... on the sidewall it took a chunk out... it's still hanging on by a lil thread. Should i cut the chunk off, its a brand new yokahama avs 1000 i dont wanna get rid of it... its getting moved to the back for sure, but is there any thing else i can do????

check to see if you can see any cords or steel belt or nylon....if you don't see any of the above then take some rubber cement and glue it back....... if you see the above mentioned take it back to wear you bought it and get it replaced under the road hazard warranty

Rubber cement isn't going to work.

And there usually aren't any belts or cords on the sidewall.

How deep is the chunk?

its about the size of a fifty cent peice around and about 1/4" deep... i was just gonna slice it off with a razor very carefully, but i would rather glue it back on, if not for a lil protection, at least to make it look a lil better...

1/4" is pretty deep. I would replace the tire.

Are you sure about that? According to the diagram below, the nylon belts (shown in red and in gold) appear to only cover the tread area, not the sidewall. There are polyester body plies, though (maybe you're referring to those?). And some sizes have steel sidewall inserts, but others do not.

(Incidentally, I am assuming that the tire he is referring to is the Yokohama AVS ES100. There is no such thing as an AVS 1000. And BTW, it's spelled "carcass", not "carcus".)

I would still replace the tire...

by the way polyster is spelled polyestar.......the nylon belt edge caps overlap the polyestar towards the sidewall of the tire for improved handling

No, it's not. It's spelled POLYESTER. Just like you see it in that diagram above.

(I corrected the previous typo, though. )

By the way, "carcus" is spelled carcass.

I think you are correct about "cords or steel belt or nylon" in the sidewall, because that is the sidewall support. Only they are called "body plies" and "steel sidewall insert". Only a minor semantics problem.

If the plies or steel sidewall insert ( I know they are steel wires) are exposed, then I agree with replacement of the tire.

I would rather replace it, wouldnt be much fun to hit a big bump on the freeway and have it blow out.

Ah, of course, the Newfie way of testing a tire. Drive it as fast as you can and see if you die or not.

Just cause it didn't go this time doesn't mean it won't go the next time. There is a reason a tire like that wouldn't pass safety.

Cheers.

dont be cheap.. you rather have your life, and spend $50 on a new tire or a quick fix and possibly end up endangering your life as well as others
